It'll be tough making a new Smash. I know they won't ever make a Smash game as complex as Melee again, so I don't see how they could really upgrade the game. I imagine the series has to be essentially the same speed/style as Ultimate moving forward or we'll definitely lose something. I am one of those people obsessed with Smash, and I'm happy with the way Ultimate plays more than any other Smash game. I'd be sad if they drastically changed it to be less complex like they did with Brawl. I think their best bet is continuing Ultimate on future consoles but there's also the side where I don't know that they could get characters like Sora approved for another game. If there's a brand new Smash game for whatever the next Nintendo console is, it's bound to be controversial since it will likely need a reduced roster. But I don't know. It's all just speculation at this point. I imagine the Switch will be around for a while.

It’s only controversial to Smash weirdos (I say this lovingly), but Smash is a mainstream juggernaut and the mainstream does not give a fuck about all these details, they just want Smash on their new Nintendo

If the roster is reduced slightly because of rightsholders being pricks, that's unavoidable. I think the best way to continue the series is to keep everyone in the game that they can, secure new DLC fighters to add, and just build on Ultimate.

A live service Smash game would not be a good idea for Nintendo nor would it be sustainable. People don't want the same Smash released over and over again.

People also don't want a game with a roster that's a quarter the size of the current one, or even half the size. It's going to feel like a major step down and people will question why they're paying the same price for less content.

But what if the characters talked to each other while battling and the voices were all done by chris pratt lol

I don't have my finger on the nub of the Smash community, but based on what I've witnessed firsthand from various franchises over all sorts of media over years and years, I don't believe this is true. I think it's more often than not that people don't like when something they enjoy changes. It's different when it's for the better, but that's so subjective, and hard to gauge. People want something that tucks them into sleep like a warm blanket.

So do I think people would choose a port of Ultimate with more fighters over a totally new Smash installment with less fighters but different mechanics? I think I know what the safer bet is. I mean, we're talking about a community that is famous for having modded one iteration of the franchise to be more like the previous (talking about Project M). I feel like change is not readily acceptable.

Even if Ultimate lost Sora, Cloud, Sephiroth, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, and Minecraft Steve (assuming that Disney, Square Enix, and Microsoft were the hardest rightsholders to deal with), I would hazard a guess that most if not all of the other 3rd-party characters would probably still be involved. Hell, a lot of them have stuck around in every game since Brawl (Solid Snake, Pac-Man, Sonic, etc.). Why wouldn't they continue to stick around. They likely wouldn't lose that many.

I think most likely there will be a new Smash game when a new console comes out, and it will have a smaller roster most likely unless they implement a large number of new characters to counterbalance the lost ones. It will most likely begin controversial (at least in the Smash community) but will likely, like all iterations aside from Melee, become the new norm for pros to play. However, I do think continuing Ultimate would be the better choice. I'm fine with either honestly. If there's a new game they better fix my girl Puff though. She shouldn't have been made so shitty in every version post-Melee.

I think it's less about the Smash community itself and the idea that Nintendo doing a live service game just isn't what Nintendo does or wants to do with a game that they know sells really well with every new iteration. We have to think about it in terms of marketing and sales as well. The hype surrounding a new Smash game is always through the roof and the sales have proven to be pretty strong for new entries as well. It's always a giant event. If Nintendo just kept releasing Ultimate that would probably satisfy some of the hardcore/core Smash audience, but I don't think it would be a good idea in the long run for the casual audience.

Sakurai has been pretty open and vocal about how much work goes into balancing all the characters, keeping the game fresh and working with 3rd parties. I think we'd lose more characters than people think just from the standpoint that if they even want to try something new as in new mechanics, game modes, etc, balancing would be a huge undertaking for the dev team.

I think they just have to rip the band-aid off eventually and just be like "a lot of characters won't return for each new Smash game and that's just how it's going to be". Ultimate was a impossibly cool in terms of joining all these legendary video game franchises together, but it certainly feels like a "one and done" kind of thing.

How would that work? haha Is it because I said "likely" a lot? I'll play the game with you though if you come up with something.

I think the main point where it would become an issue is for casuals that want to become more than casuals, because a huge roster like that is a high barrier to entry. I poked fun at it before, but I feel like that's exactly why they rebooted Mortal Kombat, to get back to the core of the franchise and trim the fat for newcomers, and it worked. So I get it.

By the way, I'd like to state that I'd totally be down for a long running, live service Smash game if I thought a) Sakurai and team would want to pursue it b) I had any faith that Nintendo could do it well or c) the gameplay and game itself wouldn't suffer because of it.

Unless they decided to go all gung-ho into it and become something like Fortnite where it's constantly evolving and changing, I don't see Nintendo really doing a good job of it.

The large character roster in Ultimate can definitely be an obstacle for anyone wanting to get more serious with the game. I have like 700 hours in Ultimate and there are still a ton of matchups I've gotten next to no experience playing. I swear I've only fought like, 5 Duck Hunts the entire time the game has been out so I lose that one every time.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of live service games if they're done well. You know, before they were called live service like MMOs haha. I used to play City Of Heroes for years and I really like having a game I love that I can come back to every few months and there's just a ton of fresh content.
