In terms of gameplay Gen 1 has to be the worst (although i haven't played 6 and 7, and just started 8). There are too many mistakes and errors

It pretty much comes down to this and people have different expectations/ideas of what they want for character designs. There's few I don't like for every generation. Boltund looks like my dog so I love it.

The best starters are still Gen 1. Mew and Mewtwo are also the best legendaries. Lugia, Ho-oh and the dogs are still top tier.

Most of the earlier Pokémon (especially gens 1 - 3) looked like animals. A good portion of the new Pokémon look like characters instead of animals, especially when it comes to starters.
