Seriously considering buying Origami King. I never played the earlier games, so nostalgia isn't an issue for me. Worth it?

If you don't have any attachment to the RPG nature/nostalgia of the first two and just want a fun, light-hearted adventure game with a lot of good humor and pretty environments, I would highly suggest it.

My joycons came in today. But I won’t be home until tomorrow to check them out. I’ll let @oldjersey know them if they just swapped them out for new/refurbished ones. I think they had to because there was zero turn around time

These last few days have been pretty crazy in the classic nintendo community due to source code for some popular games coming out and the community data mining to get some insane stuff. I suggest checking Twitter to see because there is a lot. I think the overall favorite of the leaks has been that Luigi model that was found in the code so people can actually put together a luigi model to play with.

I also really love the HQ art that has come out of it.

These are the cool kinda hacks and such. Just finding ancient materials from games like some stuff a Dev who worked on Star Fox 2 hasn't seen in over 20 years.

Damn, so cool they reconstructed Luigi from old Mario 64 source code

If they somehow got their hands on Ura Zelda that would be insane. Sounds doubtful, though

Was so funny when someone found and pointed out a bunch of code commits in there that were littered with notes like "FUCKING WITH PETES CODE" to him lol

I think I'm in the minority but the more I play Origami King the more bored I am with it.

mine came in yesterday! they are definitely new. the finish on them is way more matte than I remember mine and they were day one cons that came with the console.

the blue on the left and gray on the right looks so good.

don’t think this is the minority view at all, at least with regard to the battles

I agree. I take back what I said earlier about the battles - they get very annoying and overly tricky at times (maybe I just fucking suck at it lol). But it becomes monotonous. I got it a couple days after it came out and I haven't even gotten to the first boss yet heh

Origami King was a 7.75/10 game for me, honestly. The battles becoming an annoying chore really brought down the experience. Luckily you can avoid a lot of them so you don’t HAVE to engage with them too too often. But it should have/could have been great.

Mine are definitely new or refurbished. I honestly thought they were going to charge me to fix them because my son had dropped both of them at some point and they looked pretty beat up. On one of them the shoulder buttons weren’t working at all. This all happened after they developed drift though. So I figured I’d take my chances and looks like they just sent out the replacements

Yeah I haven't gotten to a boss yet either, just got to the part where Mario basically finds out he has to find the infinity stones. But yeah, my main gripe with the game is that it feels way too monotonous and overly easy at times. It's definitely fun at times, but it easily could've been a better game.

I enjoy the story and dialogue a lot. Level and character design is fantastic. I like finding the hidden toads, collectibles, etc... but what really stops the game from being an epic game is the lack of variety in the battles. I feel like they're all the same. I'm on the 4th streamer and it's pretty much the same ole repetitive combat over and over. You either line up guys in a row to jump on them or bunch them up in a 2x2 formation and whack them with your hammer. I was hoping there would be more to it than this.

Also, I feel like shiny/fancy hammers, shiny/fancy boots, fireballs, etc... are mostly worthless. For instance, if I have 2 attempts to kill some dudes with 30HP, I can likely do the same basic jump move twice for say... 16HP of damage a piece. This would kill them. Or I can use a shiny boot and get 20HP for my first action. But I would still need another action move to kill the enemies so why waste a "shiny" object? I don't know if what I'm saying is easy to understand, but it fucking drives me nuts how unimportant items in your inventory really are.

Panzer Paladin is also pretty cool. It's basically old school MegaMan with a mech you pilot around trying to save the world.
