Didn’t he turn down a huge money contract this past spring, in turn betting on himself and his health? It’s not like the salary system is dysfunctional and punishing Dak (at least, any more than any other player) so much as Dak made a bad business decision and was unlucky.

Dak Prescott turned down a 5yr deal worth ~$30mil/yr as I understand it...for two reasons. One, he wanted a 4 year deal...and two, he wanted it to touch closer to $40-45mil/year.

In that same off-season, Deshaun Watson signed a 4yr/$156mil extension (so 4 years + ~$40mil), and Patrick Mahomes signed a 10 year, $450mil deal (so, longer than 4 years, but they more than paid him to make it longer).

Meaning Dak was 100% correct not to sign a deal that undervalued by about $10mil/year...and now the Cowboys either have to pay him $37.5mil on another franchise tag off a major ankle surgery, or risk losing him for nothing a la Drew Brees.
