Another reason why the only thing good about TDN is the mock draft simulator

nah this isnt far off. I was very unimpressed, but I did finish it at least. Such an underwhelming ending

The entire movie just follows this schmuck around for a few days, reinforces that he’s an unlikeable guy even though I got the feeling they were trying to get me to like him, and then bang, the end. Just couldn’t get into it.

(It’s fine to not like it I’m mostly kidding, even though I’m right)

Focusing on the likability of the main character isn’t a good way to watch uncut gems. It’s really not a good way to go into any movie unless it’s a superhero movie I guess

Likeability of characters is a huge part to enjoying almost all movies. There are only a few movies that can pull off being great with unlikeable characters. They exist for sure but aren’t the norm. What am I missing?

    The rivalry is back on

Less so in movies, but I feel like it’s more common than not in 2010s prestige television that the characters range from “definitely bad but maybe likeable” to “this person is straight trash” and they get by with strong scripts and good acting

It depends on the story and what it’s trying to do. It is absolutely not always necessary

It’s been awhile since I’ve brought up Kieslowski in the NFL thread but I‘m glad to do so again to cite A Short Film About Killing

One of the most renowned American directors of all time has made a career off unlikable leads. (Scorsese)

i haven’t seen all of the scorsese hits, but at least the ones I’ve seen, the main characters may be assholes but you still like them/are cheering for them to some extent. Goodfellas is the example that comes to mind immediately.

I’ve derailed us enough though. I’m cool w being in the minority for not liking uncut gems and don’t consider this opinion to be a cool edgy take

    You’ve got mail.

not really, but I'm by no means a movie expert and don’t think my favorites list has many classics. I love you man, inception, the lotr movies, I’ll watch any marvel movie, I fucking love avatar but recognize it’s pretty trite and formulaic. And then stuff like wizard of oz, Alice in wonderland, toy story, og willy wonka.

    let the flames begin.

Yeah, there's a vanishingly small number of dramas in the early 2010s that have purely likeable characters without major character defects that verge them into villain territory. Justified/Raylon Givens might be as close as you get to "good", and he routinely abuses suspects, breaks the law, and at one point abets a murder by the mob. Far more likely you're getting a Khaleesi or Carrie Mathison or Phil and Elizabeth from The Americans (likeable people who are literally committing treason).

edit: Acutally, ironically enough, the two hour-long shows I can think of that had a lot of good/likeable characters are people who are/were criminals...in Rectify and Orange is the New Black.

Coach Taylor is the most likable character in a drama being least problematic and it’s football who’s with me

I know I said I'd keep all lacrosse relegated to my own personal thread that @uuu sometimes visits, but since there aren't a lot of live sports to check out right now, y'all should watch this at noon thirty. It's the Premier Lacrosse League championship. It's the #1 seed and reigning champ vs. the #7 seed. I have a former student playing and a few others working for the league. It's nationally televised on NBC. It's definitely going to have some big hits and sweet goals.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that lacrosse, especially when a lot of us were younger, was really problematic for a lot of reasons, be it equity and inclusion all the way down to general douchebaggery and entitlement. I've seen a lot of growth in the community over the past 15 years and the PLL embodies a lot of that. It has been on board and pushing LGBT+ issues and BLM since before it became a woke capitalist marketing ploy in the past few months, each team has been playing on behalf of a charity this year with many focused on class-based inequities and growing the game in underserved communities, and they've been pushing the envelope with their broadcasts to make it more engaging.

Even if you don't end up liking it or don't know any of the rules, check it out for a few minutes and then turn it off if it's really that bad and come back and tell me that between liking lacrosse, not liking Uncut Gems, and being a Gator fan I am probably the worst person on this website. Now I really do promise not to bring up lacrosse in here again unless someone else brings it up first.
