Does that include college too? I know Lincoln Riley does NOT teach QBs to play under center at all (Kyler had to learn to do actual snap cadences in the NFL and for the first year or so he was still clapping to snap) but not sure if Saban did.

 

There have been criticisms of the scheme being too “college-friendly” for Hurts and not a complicated offense, especially passing game, at all for years now. I know Sirianni and Moore will say they like having Hurts in the shotgun because of what he can provide in the run game and, while that does deserve its credit, limiting the offense to basically no under center plays until this year (and they still don’t do much) is just not good design in my opinion. Literally just throwing away entire schemes and play designs.

I know Burrow prefers exclusively playing in the gun as well and there have been other QBs who have felt similarly throughout time, but Hurts is not the same caliber of QB that Burrow is.

 

It’s also why I’m so critical of Sirianni because it seems so obvious that he still has a large say in the offense. Maybe it’s Hurts who is having final say in the offense, but the mind-meld of Hurts-Sirianni-Johnson wasn’t it last year and the mind-meld of Hurts-Sirianni-Moore ain’t it this year. The filmgrinders I listen to have been saying all season that this offensive design is nothing like what Kellen Moore has done in Dallas or last year in LA. Just seems like he was brought in to add just a smidge of under center play action and motion and that was it
