ngl i think I liked All Quiet more than 1917.

 

1917 was fascinating as a technical exercise and extremely enjoyable as a cinematic escapade but All Quiet On The Western Front is the better World War I movie.

 

I love 1917, but there were a few moments that broke the spell for me and I really *felt* the gimmick of the whole thing being one continuous shot, the main one being when he's running fast at night and jumps into a river and is carried down the river for a while. I ended up thinking it maybe should have been a little shorter and dropped a few sequences, or perhaps have not been entirely beholden to the whole one shot thing and instead have been more like Children of Men, where it seems like only a handful of sequences all done in one shot. Or two shots. But I suppose if you're gonna jump through all of the crazy hoops to simulate two long shots, you might as well go for one.

 

Felix Kammerer hadn't acted in a film before. What a performance.

 

I did not know that. That is astounding.

 

Movies That Made Us is really making me realize how many directors are just straight up assholes haha. Landis, Burton and Cameron all sound like insufferable egotists, with Landis showing no remorse at all for the twilight zone accident

You can see where Max Landis gets his inflated ego from. Both are awful, awful people.

 

I didn't know until recently that the person that was killed by Landis' negligence was Jennifer Jason Leigh's dad !!!!

7-year-old Myca Dinh Le and 6-year-old Renee Shin-Yi Chen.

 

Just now learning about all this, wow. What really hits close to home, for me, is that My-Ca Dinh Le was born in Vietnam and was brought to California by his parents, likely due to the war. Also, from wiki: "In 2009, (John) Landis signed a petition in support of director Roman Polanski," and "In December 2017, (Max) Landis was accused of sexual assault by former co-worker Anna Akana." Just garbage people, really.

Yeah, the John Landis Twilight Zone Movie story is horrific. There is definitely a lot of blame to go around on that one if you read about it, but I think he deserves more of it than anyone else involved. Just an absolutely despicable piece of shit.

 

Behind the Bastards podcast did a couple of episodes about Landis earlier this year I think.

 

Knew nothing about Landis and now I'm sad that my favorite movie of all time is by him :(
