That got me thinking. As turn of the millennium nostalgia in movies/tv becomes more popular, it's going to be a real challenge to re-create that very specific dark cynical pre-9/11 ennui that was pervasive in culture from like 1998 to 2000.

I also wonder if it coming out close to Stranger Things also affected it because a lot of people that aren’t familiar with it kinda got a “Stranger Things but girls vibe”

  5. I honestly wouldn't have given it a shot if I didn't have the theater scene spoiled beforehand on tiktok

well I finished Amphibia tonight after the longest, shittiest shift at work and man. just a full on snotty mess over here, I cried so hard I gave myself a headache

don't even have any thoughts yet, I'll probably find some after I sleep but man. what a show. hard to believe how invested I got after struggling through the first ten episodes of s1

Maya Hawke and “Do Revenge” is a fairly decent teen movie

I knoooooow! So glad you got there. I just loved that final season and the entire arc of the finale is so well executed.

”But of the things you let go, you’d be surprised…what makes its way back to you” OH GOD. I was so, so moved and yes, I cried as well. It really meant a lot to me and addressed some areas in my own life that needed some attention from me. The entire montage of everyone’s endings from the statue of Anne being unveiled, Polly all grown up, Sprig willingly running off on a new adventure, to the closing moments when her old friends quite literally come back just left me a puddle. Anne being chosen as the next guardian as well (and knowing she gets to live a long life to the old age of 91) is so satisfying.

Was having a blast with Do Revenge until Eleanor stays friends with Drea. Maybe I’m friends with a bunch of angry people but I don’t know a single queer person who would be friends with someone who outed them that maliciously

It sounded like she was more angry with the type of person Drea made her seem like, versus the act of the outing itself, but yeah, highly suspect these two would end up as friends in real life

yeah, the whole run of last three episodes was absolutely spectacular. maybe some of the best cartoon content I've ever seen

I loved how they burned through the big, epic battle in the penultimate episode and then focused on the small-scale stuff for the finale. the relationships between the characters was really the backbone of the whole show and they really did that justice - I mean they had Sprig and Anne say goodbye like three times and each time hit harder than the last lmao. even though the fakeout deaths were starting to feel a little old (I get it's a kids show, but faking out deaths for Marcy, Sprig, Andrias, Grime and Anne was a liiiittle much) I loved her conversation with the guardian - the weird offbeat humour after such an intense sequence of events had some real Doctor Who vibes)

my only critiques really were that Andrias' heel-turn felt a little too convenient right when they needed it most (although Leif's letter was beautiful, it really got to me) and there was not enough of the three girls fighting together with their powers. I mean, all that buildup! let us see them kick ass a little together before Anne does the thing. pretty small nitpicks on the whole, though. the actual last few minutes were so insanely good, I have a lot of respect for how shows like this and Gravity Falls will leave you with a bittersweet finale that drives home the message so eloquently. I kind of wish I'd had shows this good when I was actually a kid, but I doubt I would have appreciated them lmao

anyway, think I'm gonna move onto Infinity Train next, which I've heard amazing things about. shame I have to resort to watching it illegally cos HBO Max fucking sucks, but oh well

Dark Winds is a breath of fresh air. It's so entertaining and swiftly paced - not a lot of filler, every scene advances the plot. 6 episodes. Quick in and out.
