Right but it begs the question how do we as individuals change something far beyond the scope of our reach, beyond just avoiding seafood. It's saddening to see even the ocean rights orgs not willing to go as far to admit a problem there. It's a full frickin industry paid for by our taxes.

If humans, as a whole, were to stop supporting the industry it would collapse.

A ban on deep sea fishing would be a nice start. Our own complicity with our dependency on this wheel built so long ago that clearly is not long term sustainable for the planet or us is what allows it to keep functioning.

It does beg the question of what would populations whose primary source of income and food are from the sea do.

And I knew some of the details (pollution, possible extinction of certain species, bycatch) but I was in the dark about the slave labor aspect, criminal organization ties, fish farming disease/pollution and just how prevalent micro plastics are now in marine life.

When he interviewed the escaped slaves, that was wild. Really disturbing stuff I also didn't know anything about. I don't eat seafood, but I was also shocked at how unregulated it is--the dolphin safe labels and sustainability markers having little to no significance.

Everything in that doc was important, but there was a thread on Reddit from someone in the industry that debunked a lot of it. I mean, understood since its a doc that it leans on one side.

I think it’s a fascinating conversation because the film criticizes ocean conservation groups for turning a blind eye, and they’re really the mainstream advocates for this stuff, so of course they’re gonna come out and defend themselves so they still keep the public’s trust. Of course it’s a nuanced conversation but I generally think it’s a positive thing to pressure these groups to be more transparent and progressive. They shouldn’t be the primary voice/gatekeepers in conversations about environmentalism and they should continue to adapt to the changing times.

Interesting stuff. Seems like some of what the OP posted is also being refuted. At the very least a conversation has been started...

This sounds like someone’s big moment. Addresses maybe 20% of what this documentary reveals and is ironically cherry picking details to come out swinging for sustainable fish farming and defending what seems to be things that are still true but “not as bad as they make it seem” which, is complicity basically. Like, that for now it’s fine and won’t get worse but definitely will.

Bad Trip made me laugh harder than I have at a movie in an insanely long time. Absolutely ridiculous hilarious stuff.

  17. Finally decided to start making my way through Veep. Tried a couple years ago and only made it a few episodes before sorta forgetting about it. Liking it a lot more this time overall, but wow season 3 has been an insane improvement over the others so far

My wife & I talk to each other with so many one liners from that show.

“Clean up your own dirty diaper, Dan”

“you’re already dead. What you do now you do for your family”

“do you have anything in the McClintock shape?”

“the thing is, all men are terrible...you just have to find the least terrible one”

I just have the series finale to watch. It’s been a genuinely great show. Only season that was a little weird for me was season 6.

It didn't go as hard into the insurrection as I expected; and there were a bunch of things with Fred that happened all at once.

But Ron accidentally outs himself as Q, so maybe someone with balls can begin pursuing justice.

God, I have to wait until tomorrow to watch, but I can’t wait. Just incredible that Q followers would simply explain any such self incrimination away as “it’s all part of the plan” or what the fuck ever.
