Got so bummed on a recent viewing of urban legend for the lols that leto was in it, completely forgot about that, tho I did remember that pacey from DC, Robert Englund, and the young girl from Halloween 4 and 5 were. A tryhard whose career has spanned decades, unfortunately

In regards to Leto, I just think he's a better actor than most people seem to, but he's not even worth defending because he seems like an actively terrible person.

I remember thinking that Shutter Island was okay-ish when it came out, but much less than the sum of its parts. But I do remember having a hard time watching it objectively for reasons that had little to do with the film itself.

I was a huge film buff / wannabe filmmaker who grew up right outside Worcester, MA. Scorsese wanted to film the movie in Worcester and use this amazing building that was just standing there not doing anything →

but Worcester told him to fuck off because it's a terrible city that refuses to do anything even remotely cool, and they said they were gonna be knocking the buildings down, even though that building was still there when Shutter Island came out in theaters.

I think I am long overdue for a fresh viewing of Shutter Island. As of right now I would probably say that it's one of Scorsese's worst films, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad film. Not by a long shot.

Leto is a massive douche who sometimes gives good performances and sometimes is an overacting loon. The idea that you’d have to be upset at watching a movie because he’s in it is weird to me.

Well, him being a monstrous creep who “allegedly” preys on teens is a pretty good reason to be upset if he’s in a movie. (Really hope we get a big, “official” piece on his awfulness published somewhere soon so this can become more of a publicly known thing.)

But, separate from that, I also just have never liked one of his performances, tbh. If he were a good person, I’d still want him out of my Blade Runner & whatnot; I’d just want him sticking to big rock anthems then, instead of being held accountable for his awfulness.

I kinda figured as much, lol, which is why I said I hope a more official piece gets released before too long.

If you look around the internet, you can find accounts from over the years on, like, Twitter & forums & whatnot, but it's just never really gained any traction in the media. I think the most "official" comment I've ever seen is when James Gunn once casually mentioned it Twitter in a reply to someone? Feels like one of those Bryan Singer style "rumors" that's just waiting for a long, well sourced piece on the matter.

I didn't know about him preying on teens. I had read the stories about him sending "gifts" like anal beads and used condoms to his fellow actors while staying in character as the Joker during filming of Suicide Squad. And I had seen videos of him on these weird retreats with fans of his band where he was running around looking like a weird hippy/Jesus cult leader guy. But I assumed all those people were there willingly, and since it looked like somewhere really nice and maybe tropical, more than willingly - I had assumed they had paid asinine amounts of money for the opportunity to be there with with. He always seemed to me like a HUGELY arrogant, supreme douchebag.

In & Of Itself was wild. Watched it last night due to this thread and my wife and I were just going wtf at everything. And laughing. And definitely teary-eyed up at times.

The late 90s/early 00s were a great time because it was just Jared Leto getting the shit kicked out of him in “American Psycho,” “Fight Club” and “Panic Room.” I still get mad at what a wet blanket he is in “Blade Runner 2049.”

The only thing I remember about Shutter Island was that it was one of the first DVDs I requested from Netflix when that was a thing. I’d be willing to watch again

Shutter Island isn’t bad but I also doubt many people would care about today it if it a wasn’t Scorsese film

Just watched In & Of Itself as well. Just unbelievable and then find out he got Frank Oz (aka Yoda) to direct this stage show/movie. The whole thing is wild. Currently scouring the internet to learn everything about the guy.

Malcom & Marie is great, and after watching it I'm convinced at least some of the bad reviews are due to the writers having their egos checked during the course of the movie

I just watched Shutter Island again on Netflix for the first time since it originally came out. This time I thought it was a lot better than I gave it credit for back then, but I remember thinking it was pretty bad back then. I think I got too caught up in knowing the plot ahead of time when I first saw it. I remembered the vague, rough outline of the overall plot going in this time, but I had forgotten a lot of the little details. I had a lot of fun this time watching Mark Ruffalo's character and his reactions the whole time to some of the stuff Leo's character does, in the context of what's actually going on.

The story is what it is, and I don't think it was ever going to be amazing or even that great, but I think Scorsese made about as good of a movie out of this story as you could, short of massively restructuring the entire movie and the conceit behind it.

When all is said and done, I can't help but wonder if the movie would have been far more enjoyable as a straight drama telling the story of some doctors trying out a radical treatment on a severely mentally ill patient when the rest of the establishment had written him off and wanted to just lobotomize him and be done with it. Drop all of the schlocky thriller shit. Lose the 'twist' so to speak, and all of the mystery stuff. Maybe have an opening sequence with Teddy & Chuck being U.S. Marshals and investigating, but pull the curtain back relatively quickly in the film and show the audience what is actually going on.

I realize that this is insanely arrogant of me to think I know what makes a better movie than Martin fucking Scorsese, arguably one of the greatest living American filmmakers, but I really can't help thinking it though. In the end, the whole thing just seems kinda misguided and silly.
