I know I am very late to the party on this one, but I just watched The Little Things. I don't think I hated it nearly as much as most people seem to have. I liked 2 out of 3 of the main actors' performances, and think the other one was simply miscast. I even think I mostly liked the story. The editing though was so fucking bad. Like Liam Neeson jumping over the fence / Bohemian Rhapsody levels of bad. The editing made simple, straightforward scenes confusing as fuck in a very annoying way. I honestly wonder if this was a much longer film that they chopped down drastically. That makes so much more sense than high level filmmakers actually making some of the choices they made here.

Ultimately, I ended up just wishing that one of the better and actually competent directors who were attached to the project over the years had actually taken the plunge on it. Not Spielberg. I'm glad he didn't waste his time on it - even though he would have directed the ever loving shit out of this movie, obviously. 90's Clint Eastwood though could have made this a solid B+. Danny Devito back in the day would have done something interesting with this at least. Maybe.

Long story short, it was definitely a turd but I'm kinda glad I watched it anyway.

My only issue with The Little Things was the unanswered nature of it all

I only knew John Lee Hancock as a big name screenwriter who's been around forever. I remembered loving A Perfect World when I was a little kid. I didn't think I had seen any of his movies as a director, but I found out he did the Netflix movie The Highwaymen with Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson, and I liked that one. This one felt very off to me.

Denzel was the only one that was somewhat decent in the little things. Leto was laughably bad and Rami seemed like it was his first time acting.

Also rewatched shutter island for the first time since the theater and it’s just completely forgettable. Some terrible green screen shots as well.

I haven't seen Shutter Island since seeing it in theaters for my wife's 1st birthday that we were together. That's all I remember about it.

I’ve seen worse but I remember how disappointed everyone was (not on this site, on another forum) when it was moved to a February release because that pretty much meant it stood no chance of being “award worthy”

I actually really liked Jared Leto in The Little Things. I feel like the movie kinda found it's footing a little bit when he showed up. I usually tend to like him as an actor when he shows up in things though.

Rented The Kid Detective tonight. It's $4 on Prime.

Wow, I very strongly disagree - I don't even think his was the worst performance in the movie, nevermind that I've ever seen.

I’d agree with this. Even the way he walked looked exaggerated and distracting. Who swings their arms that much?

And the writing is mostly to blame but his “funny” lines were horrible but were even worse because he just can’t sell comedy.

Jared Leto is the real definition of “overacting”. People point to stuff like Al Pacino screaming and I get it because he can go 0-100 in a millisecond but at least he’s making choices based on the truth of his character and scenes. Leto is all posturing, weird affectations that distract, and empty caricatures. He’s always sucked and the movies that understand that are the ones that cast him as an empty character with no soul (American Psycho, Requiem for a Dream, Blade Runner 2049)

It’s funny because people say this about After Hours, and Cape Fear, and The Age of Innocence, and Kundun, and The Aviator, and...
