Honestly I spent a long while not being exposed to people actually unironically supporting and defending joe and it makes me sad and confused

there’s been this wave of people & articles coming out Like “the problematic things no ones talking about in tiger king” and I was like?? All my friends ARE talking about this stuff?!

but then I got into a TK meme group with 600,000 people and I was exposed to the gross reality of many

“the problematic things about tiger king” is so stupid lmao. it’s like if people aren’t explicitly told something is bad, they’ll assume it’s not

Yeah I mean in my opinion the doc doesn’t paint him as anything other than a weird villain but I’ve seen a lot of arguments about how it paints him to be the good guy and I’m like uhhhhhhh really

Even lot of people who purport to be “woke” misread media. The Wolf of Wall Street discussion nearly broke me.

I was in that group too, but left it. All it was was people calling Carol a bitch.

Tons of people (if not most, honestly) don’t engage with anything they watch critically, which leads to huge amounts of gross behavior and excuses made for awful people in countless fandoms. It’s bad enough when it happens for fiction, but when real people are involved the lines get blurred even further and everything gets messy in a more impactful way.

yeah that’s definitely true and I guess that’s what I’m realizing is the extent of how common it is to NOT engage critically I guess

I actually got in when it was very small still like less than 50k. When I went to look how big it was for that post, I was shocked how big it got. But yeah I got in when I was making my meme collection for a bunch of memes and mostly forgot about it. I will agree that’s the ongoing sentiment and like I said that group is what made me realize how common people are actually defending joe and others and it’s all a big yikes from me

I stay in the group bc some of the memes are still great and also there’s been several people posting all kinds of things looking for their 15 secs of fame. People who used to work with anyone/anywhere involved in the doc, people posting articles from over the years pertaining to joe, people writing to joe in prison etc

Even though Joe is obviously a piece of shit I could actually agree that the doc kind of seems to side with him a lot of the time. They definitely frame him as the "protagonist" for a good portion of it at least

I mean, the shows literally called tiger king and is about him so of course he’s the protagonist in a way.
I can see how some feel the show doesn’t paint him enough as a bad guy though (even tho, like you said. It’s obvious)
But I feel, particularly in the last episode, it came across as clear to me that he is a bad guy who did bad things.. even if they give him the benefit of the doubt and concede that the murder for hire plot might have been specifically unfair/orchestrated by others, I still felt it did an okay job at circling around and reminding that despite that he still really did do bad things

however I know after the show ended Ive seen all kinds of allegations and statements about him/his past and I think it deff was a conscious choice to leave that stuff out of the documentary, which is sketchy/gross

I saw a post about someone waiving a sign that says “honk if you think carol baskins a (you know what)” and it was just so fucking stupid. Why are people so dumb? And predictably they weren’t wearing a mask or gloves or anything.

Guy has me watching Attack on Titan anime and I mostly like it but it's so jarring how female Titans are treated vs male ones. Female one got objectified, told she has a great ass or whatever, and they're constantly calling her a bitch. Whereas the male ones obv aren't regarded that way at all. I pointed it out and guy clearly hadn't noticed. Def made me think of engaging with media critically. So often I think it comes from a place of privilege to not view things critically. I wish it was like a mandatory class taught early in life

It's usually the aim of English classes, some of mine did a pretty solid job, but yes many don't seem to apply those lessons outside of the books they might have to have read for school

Maybe my memory sucks but I dont remember English teaching us to think critically until hs, and honestly by then I really struggled because I had no idea how to think critically because I was so used to just memorizing stuff.

My English classes taught us how to identify what storytelling is doing, what themes are, what authors are trying to do and how to analyze what we’re reading, what satire is, etc. Maybe I had relatively good ones, I was also in honors and AP English and literature classes
