I’m 31 and have never seen that name or case before ever. I remember vividly Jon Bennet, Holloway, the mom from Florida with the little girl, cruise ship husbands, etc. but nothing about that name or case sounds at all familiar

Like Natalee Holloway, Meredith kercher/Amanda knox, and Madeline McCann were all such huge stories from that era. All over the grocery store tabloids which thinking about that now is gross

I think Jon Benet is the only one I’ve heard of that’s been mentioned here.

The McCann story is/was ridiculously big here in the UK. A lot of people here (especially nowadays) are angry about the amount of money that’s gone to the investigation into her disappearance over the years (it’s a hell of a lot of money), especially people from lower class area’s. There’s no way the amount of time, money and effort into that case would’ve been spent/granted if she hadn’t have been from a wealthy family.

I’m looking forward to watching this though as I’m sure there’s plenty of details I don’t know about the case. From what I have read over the years my gut feeling on this one is she died while the parents were out for their meal and then the parents got rid of the body overnight. Then the case blew up in the UK media and a with so much money being spent, they just kept blagging it with the whole she was taken story. Until it reached a point where they could never admit what actually happened. The theory in that she was actually taken just makes me so sad to think what could've happened to her, either way it's such a sad case

Didn't they just get more money to spend on looking for her? It's crazy.

Yeah, I think either earlier this year or end of last year the investigation got granted more money.

I actually worked for a decently-large newspaper from 2007-2011...still never heard of this case.

Finished the entirety of Gotham. Trying to figure out what I wanna watch now.

Probably watch some of the shorter shows on my list before starting something that has a lot of seasons

How is this possible?? I’m not even the biggest true crime follower and I think I could still recite most of the major facts of the case. It was like unavoidably huge. This is fascinating.

It should be noted that, in 2007, I was only 22-years-old and was most certainly getting belligerently drunk every single night, so I didn't even know my own address back then.

That makes more sense. I remember it being on like every website homepage and on every paper/tabloid/magazine at the grocery store and of course on TV, but if you were in your own little world I guess you would miss those things.

I think I read somewhere it was 8, personally I'm not huge on these long drawn out docuseries that Netflix keep doing. I'd much rather watch a 2 hour documentry film on something like this but I'll prob try and persist through this one.

Update:. My wife says she knows the case for sure so I'm gonna chalk this one up to me just tuning everything out at that point in time

    hmmm

It's incredible how big it still is here. Like if you turned the news on tomorrow and she'd been found, it would be absolutely everywhere.

Even after your clarification, I have trouble believing it!! Lmao. Did you look at THE picture? Because I would guarantee money THE picture was put on your newspapaers front page

Also back in 2007 I was still in high school so I wasn’t as aware either but I still vaguely remembered the case

However if there are people in here that claim to be into true crime stuff I would have such a hard time believing they haven’t seen anything on it. Like 20/20 and all kinds of ~unsolved~ episodes have been made about it.
Namely because most people suspected the parents.

When you guys say 'every newspaper' I'm sure it was in like the USA Today's and the New York Times and the real large national papers that you can get at any gas station across America, but I mean, I worked for a local newspaper covering the Northeast Ohio region (about 50,000 subscriptions) and it was almost mainly local news. They would never put a UK missing child on the front page of a local newspaper in Northeast Ohio. It wouldn't make any sense.

Yeah, that’s what I mean by it being unavoidable. If you went in to buy a candy bar or groceries the picture and headlines were all over the place.

It must be a local thing because I've never heard of her, but someone like Opal Jennings here was all over the place everywhere I went for what felt like half my life, but I doubt many people here have heard that name or story.
