I got a feeling this year that big franchise expanded universe type shows don't really seem to be making a big impression in 2024 like they did in the last few years. This year's House of the Dragon and Rings Of Power didn't seem to make a big of splash as their first seasons did. The Acolyte got so much shit that it got canceled. Skeleton Crew seems to be well received, but I don't see anyone outside of Star Wars fans talking about it. Agatha All Along was liked, but didn't really hit as big as Wandavison or season 1 of Loki did.

The Penguin might have been the only one that really did very well outside of it's core audience. It is the only one that got any awards recognition this year. I wonder if the taste for these big event series based on franchises is starting to ware on people.

    Edit
I guess Kathryn Hahn did get Best Actress in a Comedy Series nom at the Golden Globes, but Agatha didn't get nominated as a series.

I got through two episodes of this season of house of dragons and couldn't go on. They're too long, too dense and I literally don't remember who anyone is

Nah I mainly just going by the discourse I see outside of the targeted audience bubble.

That Dune show is another one that isn't catching on in the way they probably hoped.

I feel like the Dune show can be good for Dune fans who’ve read past the first book, otherwise I can see it not doing much for general audiences which isn’t ideal.

As far as the big epic fantasy series, I think it goes to having huge casts and multiple plotlines and then making people wait 2 years between seasons. There is going to be significant dropoff of interest from people who don't wanna go back and do a bunch of homework of stuff from two years ago they don't remember.

As far as the superhero, Star Wars, and Dune event franchise series, I think the ones that really catch on are the ones that are are a completely different genre/vibe than their mother franchise and can stand on their own. The ones that don't usually work are the ones that are too close in tone to the core franchise.

  18. It's picking up a bit but yeah, I can't see it resonating with general audiences.

One thing that hurts it is that the "Voice" works well in a book but comes across pretty lame on screen, at least imo. It's not a major part but the few scenes that have included it fell very flat for me.

I have one episode left of Drops of God (super underrated show about the wine industry on AppleTV)

what a fun show for being so niche. reminds me of The Queen's Gambit in that way. it's also impeccably shot from beginning to end. a little silly at times, but I do enjoy that element about it. the passion for its characters, its settings, and its story is alive on the screen, which is what I like most about it

  20. absolutely incredible show that no one seems to know about

This surprises me. I figured it'd be one and done because no one seems to be talking about it.

It's interesting even as someone who literally knows nothing about wine, who doesn't even really drink wine or like it. The story is just great, and the incredible establishing shots make me want to travel just like The White Lotus does.

As people in the comments are bringing up, TBMS is already on Tubi for free so why does it matter?
