2004 was a huge year for studio comedy. Now that it’s 2024 - all these movies are celebrating their 20th anniversary’s:

Anchorman, Mean Girls, Dodgeball, White Chicks, Shaun of the Dead, Team America, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Starsky & Hutch, 13 Going on 30, Shrek 2, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Along Came Polly, Meet the Fockers, Napoleon Dynamite, Envy, 50 First Dates, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Eurotrip, The Girl Next Door, Seed of Chucky, Club Dread, Soul Plane

We used to be a proper country

My buddy recommended Bodies to me and im so happy he did. That was excellent. A little hokey and like most time travel stuff, dont think about it too much, but overall very different.

    A+

I agree. I love T2, but to me the more scaled down nature of the first one makes it much more scarier. The first one feels way more like a sci-fi horror film, and T2 is more sci-fi action.

Have you seen Starship Troopers yet?

Lmao everything about robocop is iconic. Exposing corporate greed, wonderful scene chewing moments, giving me an exisistential crisis as I root for cops, etc.

Based on your love of Robocop, you need to watch Starship Troopers asap!

Paul Verhoeven picked up right where he left off.

if you like Robocop you will like Starship Troopers. Same director, similar vibes. One of the best pieces of anti-fascist satire in cinema ever.

I was originally going to add “for better or worse” to my original post but then chose not to. I remember at the time of its release I was in a really vulnerable place and was a big fan of Scrubs so it struck a chord with me. I remember it being quoted in a lot of AOL away messages at the time.

Nowadays, yeah, my opinion has changed. All of the criticisms I’ve read about it over the years since its release are fair and valid, but my actual biggest issue with it is a personal one. I wrote about it in the mental health thread, but Garden State contributed to the prolonged negative perception I had toward antidepressants at the time when, turns out, I actually desperately needed them most. It’s a subject I’ve never seen mentioned in critiques of the film and it really sticks out to me now.

the main joke in Garden State also involves a slur

also Zach Braff shouldn't have been allowed to make more movies after that

Garden State was one of those movies where the soundtrack was more memorable than the movie itself.

Garden State definitely hit different if you were around college age because it was like “Oh yeah, someone else feels like they no longer feel like home is home anymore,” etc. Plus it had a banger of a soundtrack.

I haven’t watched it in 15+ years because there’s absolutely no way it would resonate with me now. That’s a great point about antidepressants and I think influenced my friend in also avoiding them.

As for Braff - “Wish I Was Here” or whatever it was called is a film I could not hate more.
