Woohoo! I got into the JET Program so I should be in Japan starting in August and can't WAIT to soak up the music. Listened to a ton of visual kei and rock (my first real musical loves) back in the day with bands like Art School, Love Psychedelico, AKFG, and Plastic Tree -- along with the staples like Gackt and L'arc -- but haven't kept up with much aside from Babymetal lol.

Really excited to dig into some of the releases from the past 10 years or so.

@Chocobo THANKS SO MUCH! seriously, this is gonna keep me busy in a good way (I'll start with Miyavi since I listened to a TON of him). I got started with video games too (lotttttts of JRPGs like FF *kweh kweh* and SMT) and it's pretty amazing how the Japanese totally take advantage of whatever medium they use ... from haiku to video game OSTs (have you heard NieR's OST? OH MAN!)

No problem, @Collin Skeen ! Miyavi's new stuff is totally different though, and not in a good way (in my opinion at least). Still, it's solid, but I prefer his older releases. Haven't heard NieR's OST, or played the game. Definitely on my bucket list, though!

Especia was cute and fun, and it's pretty much what I expected it to be. Babymetal, on the other hand, seems to be a bit of a change-up. It's not really as "j-poppy" and catchy as I remember them being... and I don't know if I can really appreciate this new sound as much.
There were some good moments and a decent amount of variety, but the hooks aren't really grabbing me quite as strongly this time around. :(

Hey! I quoted you in another thread, but it looks like that's gone now! I'm really really into Capsule, who else should I be listening to?

Hm.. I think you could start with artists Nakata has produced/worked with, most famously probably Perfume and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. But definitely check out Coltemonikha (another duo including Nakata), Strawberry Machine, De De Mouse, Sonic Coaster Pop, MEG, Saori@destiny, Aira Mitsuki, Genki Rockets, Immi .

Also, while not really similar to Capsule I think, you absolutely have to listen to Wednesday Campanella!

CAPSULE is probably the only J-band that I still actively listen to from time to time.

I love Japan, and their taste in music is awesome (trying to learn the language, and it's pretty hard XD)

    1) I already posted this in one of the "blink 182" threads, but I thought I would share it here. They have some other good songs too, but this is the one I wanted to share/post here.

    Afromania - Let's Go Together

    2) This was one of my favorite Fairy Tail themes (I have others, but I'm only gonna share one for now)

    Rockin' Playing Guitar

    3) I can't find any youtube clips, but it is a decent opening (the full song "19sai" by Shikao Suga) for an anime called xxxHolic. (Actually managed to find a soundcloud link)

    4) Only sharing this because I liked the anime

    5) This was my favorite song to Dragon Ball Super. I wish I could have posted the music video, but for some reason the full song and video were removed from youtube.

Good Morning America - Hello Hello Hello

    6) This has to be another favorite Japanese song of mine (opening of Tokyo Ghoul)

「unravel」 - TK from Ling Tosite Sigure

    7) I found this song in an anime (which was awesome how they even dubbed/covered the songs), but here is just the song. Outside of that (if you watch anime, or even if you don't watch anime) you should definitely check out "Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad".

Beat Crusade - Hit in the USA

    8) This was suggested on the side when I was on an Afromania discovery binge. I might try checking them out later.

    Stereopony - Hitohira No Hanabira
