I mean, Lewis will gain no matter what the penalty is. I don’t think there’s a penalty that will make much of a difference, Lewis will still be fairly favoured to get a good finish. No lose situation for him.

    Oh a 10 second penalty. Expected 5.

Leclerc’s engine cuts out, Jesus Christ.

Ah ffs today is cursed for me. 6 second pit stop for Lando after staying close to Hamilton all race so far.

Yeah Hamilton is gonna win this handy. Shit.

Definitely looked like a racing incident... but the skeptic in me keeps thinking about that quote from last week where Hamilton said he was just one DNF out of the championship. Whole situation just sucks

    Great day for McLaren!

Can someone explain why exactly Hamilton was given a penalty/what rule did he break? This is my first season watching F1 and on first watch, it seemed like Max pinched in/cut him off and they accidentally touch. I now realize that that only happened because LH took the turn poorly, but either scenario just sounds like an accident. From reading tweets and reactions, all the lost nuance makes it sound like it’s a penalty just to take a turn poorly…so does the penalty mean LH should’ve backed off when max turned in and that staying too close was too dangerous? Or does it mean they thought it was intentional?

Tbh I think a lot of it is an emotional thing because it's between the title rivals, but I think it's a penalty because he took the corner poorly in a place that you have to be REALLY certain you can get past because otherwise it's dangerous.

I don't think anyone thinks it was intentional, but Lewis has a history of doing this now, just ask Alex Albon. I don't think poor driving should allow you to wipe out a rival and hospitalize him, whilst you go on to win.

certainly shouldn’t *allow* you, but it’s such a stark contrast to nascar where “rubbing is racing” and it needs to be much more egregious to warrant a penalty. Different sport of course, but still an adjustment. I agree with everything though, the optics are bad too

Can't help but think that the incident today has always been coming for Max. Always thought that his wheel to wheel style relies so much on other drivers avoiding an accident. Lewis' line into that corner was crap, but Max was also really aggressive turning in given that there was a car alongside him. Compare it to a couple of corners earlier where Lewis hangs really wide to avoid Max piling into the inside of him.

Max's post whining about the celebrations isn't helping anything and I can't believe for a moment he wouldn't have celebrated if roles were reversed. The hysterics from Red Bull and their fans in general are just laughable. Think we're going to be in for a long season of this nonsense now.

Also, I was there on Friday. Was good fun and the crowd love George. The whole "test event" thing is utter rubbish though. Will be testing myself a bit this week to see if I've come back with Northamptonshire variant.

I definitely think it was inevitable, but still think Hamilton could have avoided backing out or making the corner. If he made the corner, he probably would have passed Verstappen. I do think, with the visibility, Verstappen wouldn't have seen Hamilton was still as close as he was.

But yeah I think Verstappens ig post is just pure sour grapes.

The whole reaction from Red Bull has been embarrassing tbh, firm reminder of why I've never liked the team and despite Lewis' dominance I'd still rather see him win another title than Red Bull win.

As for the incident, I'd go something like 80/20 the fault of Lewis. Max could have done more but it was always coming with his aggressive driving over the years.

The last 10 laps from Hamilton were insane, so gutted for Leclerc not to win, but Hamilton is another level and showed how poor Bottas is.
Good race from Ric, Lando could have got a podium without the poor pitstop. But what happened to Perez? What a weird strategy to pit early and get off the hards so quickly.

Sprint race didn't add anything, especially as cars can't follow or overtake. Maybe make them do a kart race instead.

Sprint race might be better next year with the new cars?

Yeah I was baffled by the Perez stop. He stopped at a similar time to the others on mediums.

I think they both could have avoided it and probably should have, but with Hamilton being the trailing car, he has to take most responsibility. His line into the corner was pretty compromised, but there was still plenty of room for Max to go out wide and I think that's probably where Lewis was trying to put him. I think it's reflected in a relatively lenient penalty that it wasn't all one way. I don't think it will be the only time we'll see them taking each other out this year though. In fact, I think we're probably going to see some messy stuff now, particularly after the RB reaction.

Feel much the same way about RB. Horner and Marko are both such sycophants, bad losers, bad winners and are so quick to point fingers. In the most recent DTS, I found Horner absolutely detestable.

Sprint race was pretty cool I thought. The race itself wasn't amazing. We'd have seen more stuff shuffled up if Perez hadn't decided to explore the limits of the track, because he was moving forward nicely prior to that. Alonso was awesome early on too. The main thing though is that it does make each day of the race meeting exciting, because something meaningful happens. I don't want to see this format at every circuit (because it would be utter bollocks at some of them), but I quite enjoyed it and I'm enjoying a bit of out of the box thinking. Should alter the points though.

Agreed with Nick, might be better with the new cars. I liked that they had to use the soft tyres in qualifying, meant everyone was on the limit.

Does anyone know the other tracks they're trialling sprint races at?

I agree with all of that. I've seen others say it was a very lenient penalty and a "joke" but you have to penalise drivers based on the incident not the outcome. I see it as quite similar to Perez and Norris' penalties from the last race, or Russell's from yesterday. They were all incidents that could have been avoided but weren't either through mistakes like Russell's or very competitive drivers fighting on the edge. The outcome of the incident yesterday is obviously massive with Lewis getting the 25 points, but that shouldn't factor into it. I actually thought, if he got a penalty, it would have been 5 seconds.

on the RB/Merc stuff. I'm not a big fan of Verstappen or RB but I would like someone new to win the whole thing. Most of all I want an exciting championship race. If there's one thing yesterday did, it made it more exciting.

Looks like they haven't announced it yet. Rumours are that Monza may be one of them. I would take a punt on the other being the US or Brazil, just because it spreads them out across the season and those are good, racy tracks to do it at.

Yeah, I see this a lot with F1 "fans". They can't seem to get their head around the idea that you have to punish the infringement and not the result of the accident when it comes to a collision.

Yeah, I really thought he was a bit of a waste of a seat for the first few races, but having him back and enjoying himself is good to watch.

he was great throughout the sprint race. He was hurt a little in the second half being on the softs, but still defended very well.

kinda went under the radar i think but Tsunoda had a good race too after poor qualifying.

Tsunoda could have done with an extra year in F2, but Honda weren't going to miss the chance for a Japanese driver in a Honda powered car.

If you haven't seen it, Formula E always produces great racing. The Monaco GP was particularly great and shows what racing there COULD be like.

The cars aren't amazingly fast (although they will be much faster last year when the gen III cars are released), probably F3 style speeds, but the racing is super competitive, action packed and fun. I know the gimmicks like attack mode aren't for everyone but I actually find it adds an extra layer of strategy.

The London races were this weekend and the circuit is an indoor/outdoor mix in the docklands and it's really brilliant.
