I would probably rank Building Something and Everywhere somewhere in the middle

 

TMAA was a pretty life changing album for me.

 

I've been listening to a lot of TLCW lately after occasionally listening to this band now and then. I'm finally starting to understand why they're so great.

Good News was my intro but the albums before it stole my heart. I think good news is the perfect bridge between their early and latter day songwriting tho

 

Definitely. Despite it not being my all-time fav MM album, Good News is a 10/10 album and would be many other bands' masterpiece

Exactly how I feel about it. There are days where I think it's almost all the more perfect being so accessible after coming behind TM&A

 

This thread made me throw on Good News lol. The World at Large, Ocean Breathes Salty, The View, Blame It On the Tetons, One Chance, and Good Times Are Killing Me are all top-tier Modest Mouse

It's probably the only Modest Mouse album I could put on regardless of the mood I'm in

 

I think I've settled on Teeth Like Gods Shoeshine being my favorite track, I've now officially heard all of the album tracks at least once. I plan on going through again tomorrow and also maybe getting to the EPs/compilations and such.

All in all, I think I'm in love

 

The fruit that ate itself is a jam! Building Something out of Nothing got me into them, even though there's some crossover tracks, the sequencing is perfect on that record

 

Reading through this thread is really making me consider buying tickets to see them in Oklahoma next month. 3.5 hour drive each way but it'll be worth it.

 

Honestly, if you're able I'd do it. They don't play live often and hardly tour. They haven't played Cleveland in 10 years. The one and only time I saw them, I had to drive 2.5 hours to Pittsburgh (the tour with Brand New - aka the best tour ever).

 

I fell asleep while listening to Isaac Brock's wonderful lyrics and that was prettt nice.

 

Revisiting this post just because I'm amazed at how much you pick up on (presumably) one listen. I almost never grab lyrical themes the first time around, I'm seriously impressed.

 

Haha, my English major pays off in mysterious ways. I'm much more into lyrics than I am the musical aspect plus I've had to write dozens of papers analyzing books and novels in short amounts of time so I guess that contributes as well. I guess that's what, going back to our TWY discussion and such, where most people may find a band stale because their music has somewhat plauteaed I still find a lot to love because the lyrics are still so strong. But I concede that I'm the exception and not the rule haha.

But thank you, I'm only discovering more themes and such as I listen so it's been very rewarding

haha right on! yeah ive picked up a couple little references throughout Isaacs writing, he seems to be a fan of dystopian and satirical stories.

 

I say this and then they announce 20 more U.S. dates two hours later, haha.

 

For sure. I've seen them 5 times, but they're consistently one of the best live acts around.

Super jealous of that. In general, reading comprehension is one of my major weaknesses, especially so with poetry. As a result, sometimes I have trouble interpreting lyrical themes even if a song virtually hits me over the head with them. It makes it pretty difficult to appreciate some of the more lyrically driven bands -- I just have to try harder, read others' interpretations, etc. In fact, I've gone on a huge tangent here, but I'd chalk that up as the reason I've had difficulty really getting into a lot of hip hop, just to name one example.

 

yeah i can totally see how lyrically dense artists can be a bit trickier to get into since theres so much flying at you every second. On the flipside, I have a very difficult time listening to more atmospheric/instrumentally driven artists, or artists whos lyrics are kind of just made up (Sigur Ros being one example) and I always feels like im missing out.
