3 is better than 2 bc of PSH's performance alone, otherwise it is clearly the next worst

I like the second half of 2 more than the bulks of 1 or 3, but I guess overall it might be worse. I understand it's quite cheesy haha, but I love the action. It's also the first one I saw in theatres so maybe I have a soft spot for it.

I love how in 1 Jim is using suctions and Ethan is holding on for dear life, but in the new one Ethan and Gabriel are standing up and fighting no problem hahaha

Yeah cuz the first movie is high speed rail and this is a train going fast but not as fast. Or something idk that works for me.

i really think the original is top tier. don't agree with 3 being the worst, but there has been an increase of people saying so. i'm not lost on why there's been a downward reappraisal of sorts

Revisiting the first one in 4k recently, it looks immaculate.

When I heard Lorne Balfe’s score for Fallout, I thought, “this is kinda Metal Gear Solid-esq.”

Now that I’ve seen this installment, with lengthy, aimless dialogue about big tech, controlling truth, and a mysterious force puppeting the world — along with another epic Balfe score — I’d like to thank Cruise and McQuarrie for going Full Kojima.

Had a GREAT time, even if I think there’s a better 2:15 cut in there.

What was the point of the masks when the green smoke bombs went off, only to be able to take them off seconds later? Was the point that the green smoke was poisonous?

They did take them off very quickly. I would’ve kept that on a bit longer

    Mostly because it looks cool

I thought the first half of the movie was great. Hayley Atwell and Cruise had really great screwball comedy chemistry, particularly in the airport and Rome scenes (+ I think they had more fun with the "handcuffed chase scene" than in Tomorrow Never Dies). Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Furgeson are also so magnetic. I often found myself not missing Cruise when we were following all the female leads.

Having an AI as the big bad guy was too goofy for me. The movie ground to a halt whenever they had to discuss anything about the Entity. I kept expecting it to pop up more, like when Benji sets the car to autopilot and is plotting a new route for catching the train. I know they explained the analog communications, but Benji still needed GPS. I felt like it was inconsistent in where/how it interfered with electronics.

I think I need to come to terms with the fact that these movies will never bear any resemblance to the first one (far and away my favorite). Though I did enjoy the dutch angle-shot conversation between Hunt and Kittridge. That was a fun callback.

Them trying to explain the Entity and how it worked had me rolling my eyes in circles, for how much techno-babbel they kept using.

Side note, a dude in his 60's sat next to me, and by the time the film started he was already passed out sleeping, head lurched forward. Then like 20 minutes in he moved his back to rest on the seat, mouth open and eyes closed as he slept. Don't think he was awake more than 15 minutes the whole movie.

There definitely seemed to be dissonance with the team saying “Let’s go analog” and then Benji jumping into a self driving car while using GPS.

I hate being nitpicky about things like that, but it really bugged me from a thematic perspective. Tom Cruise in particular is such a champion of a classic era of entertaining, so they could have leaned into that with the script. Make them truly go analog, make the motorcycle jump be Hunt's decision, a leap of faith for a team that's so used to planning things out so meticulously. It also might have made his crashing into the side of the train and taking out the henchmen more satisfying.

These movies have been pretty goofy for a long time. Comparing them to Kojima is pretty accurate, they seem heady but they’re pretty nonsensical. I didn’t really have any issues with the plot, though I do agree it would’ve been cool if it fucked with Benji more.

many only real complain is how weird Ilsa’s death was. It didn’t have nearly enough weight as it should. I feel like she’s going to come back, but doing two take out deaths in a single movie would be so dumb

idk how to feel about it, it's almost like she was fridged, kiiinda, but more for Grace's character development than Ethan's, not to mention she'd already had her own character development in previous films. Was one badass fight to go out on tho
