Typical tournament mode, not necessarily the best team wins. And if anyone argues that Portugal was the best team of the tournament...thats just ridiculous. Nothing more, nothing less.

Some people think the best team should win the trophy, or at least one of the best teams. Dont you think that is reasonable?

  2. One of those "best" teams probably should have played better.

The best team of the tournament just lifted the trophy. That's why there's a trophy. It goes to the team that found a way to win. That is the point of the tournament after all.

Lol, all I am saying is that Portugal was nowhere near one of the best teams. If that is an insult to you then theres nothing much to say. I think even Portugal fans will admit that they were very lucky. Advancing as the third in their group, being lucky in the round of 16, quarters and the final. The only good game was against Wales in the semis. Thats not what I would call a deserving Euro Champion. But thats just me.

Edit: That was a reply to gonz, not to Paulie.

They still won though, and as winners, they deserve it.

They didn't lose a game all tournament, they're deserving champions.

It's an argument for the expanded tournament more than anything that they won it. They wouldn't have made the knockouts in a 16 team tourney. They really owe Iceland a lot for that last second goal flipping the bracket.

Wasn't there a clear referring error that set up Portugal's goal? Didn't watch ET because work.

Also by that logic if you score an own goal you deserve to win too, seeing as how scoring an own goal means you scored more goals. :p

In the end after the final was pretty drab from what I saw, at least it didn't go to penaldos. The Italy-Germany one nearly made me faint.

Anyway sometimes the bad guys win. That's life/football. If you want sport where the *best* always wins, that's what *pure* Olympic sports are for I guess.

But that is not how a tournament works. In a tournament mode not necessarily the best team wins. And even more so in this specific case. The third placed team of a group should never advance at all. And to even reach the final you need some good luck. You just cant have a bad day, or even just some bad luck in one game because then you might be out.

The only mode that is truely fair is the league mode. During the course of one season you will have some games with bad luck and some with good luck, it all evens out. But the team that is first in the end truly deserves it (just as the teams that are finishing last).
In a knock out mode you need to be good on every matchday. You have to perform and you have to have some kind of good luck every game. Otherwise you're out. That's just how it is and we all know it. But to say the team that won the final today was the best team of the whole tournament is just ridiculous.

It is totally ok to cheer with Portugal when you are a fan or when you like them more than France and to be happy they won. But noone in their right mind would say the best team overall won the trophy.

  17. They advanced to knockouts without winning a game and later became champions. Just weird.

The only thing we're in disagreement about is the definition of what "best" means in a tournament. Did the team with the most shots, more attractive/attacking style win? No. But if that's what you define best as, then so be it. To me, the best team is the one that lifts the trophy at the end of the day.

Overall that was a pretty shite tournament, so it had a fitting finale. Probably the worst major tournament in my lifetime. The negativity in the group stages, because you could qualify with three draws was dreadful. A really horrible format.

England shitting the bed in a thoroughly English manner was more depressing than usual as well.

Best game maybe Portugal-Hungary or Wales-Belgium? No all time classics by a long shot though.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Italia 90, but I wasn't around for that. From my memory this was quite comfortably the dullest WC or Euros I've watched.

I dont think that these stats that you mentioned (most shots, etc.) mean anything. They're more than often not even an indicator about the better team without context. But I think we all can agree to an extend what was the better team in a given game. And then following this we can agree what were the best teams in the tournament. These dont have to be the ones with the best stats. But if we ask a number of random people which were the best teams in the tournament, do you really think Portugal would be mentioned much, let alone be amongst the most mentioned? Of course not, because Portugal played an average tournament (and I'm being polite here). Most people would probably go with France, Germany and Italy, and rightfully so. Because these teams played the most attractive football. They had the most difficult route to take and they were convicing from the group stage on. Germany vs. Italy was a game that should have been the final. France-Germany was not much worse. The game today was for the most part boring like many, if not all of Portugals games. Not worthy of a final at all.

I'll tell you what. The day that they hand out trophies for playing more attractive soccer than your opponent instead of winning games, maybe we'll see eye to eye.

Seriously, man. What were Portugal supposed to do? Play a more attractive style and lose so that fans would be more entertained? They don't give a fuck about what the fans think of them. They care about lifting that trophy. How they got the thing is irrelevant.

Big Sam might actually be England manager. Jesus wept, what is the fucking point.

The worse thing is, there's very little other options if you want an English manager, which I do.

I am not judging Portugals playstyle...not at all. A team can do whatever needs to be done to get the trophy. That is totally ok. But you shouldnt say that they deserved it just because they got it. These are two different things.

If you're not getting my point after all these comments then it's probably better to just let it be at this point. I stand by saying Portugal was far from being the best team in the tournamtent. If you see it different thats ok I guess.

  24. "Deserves" has no place in sport.

Then who deserves the goddamn trophy? Jesus, Portugal won, the point of the game is to be ahead by the final whistle, and they were, regardless how they played, get the fuck over it.
