You could probably do some “idk his powers slow his aging” kinda explanation. I mean, they are mutants.

Maybe the worst path they could possibly take is changing Magneto's origin to being anything other than a holocaust survivor

I had this exact discussion yesterday. Magneto is my favorite Marvel character and has been for a while, but even I know that it will be incredibly difficult to give him a comic accurate origin. If he was to be a Holocaust survivor he would be pushing around 90 - 100….unless time travel or some sort of slow aging process is involved. I’d prefer the later if I were to choose.

I’d be fine with his parents or grandparents being Holocaust survivors/victims and him growing up in a dysfunctional family unit as a result..suffering a life of prejudice.

I’d prefer him to have direct experience as that experience is why is views are so strong, I just don’t think he has to experience the Holocaust.

OT: I rewatched Captain Marvel for the first time since I watched it in cinemas and I liked it more than I remember doing so. It’s not in the top 10 or 15, but it’s fun and I’d like a Fury and Coulson buddy cop 90s show.

I’m looking forward to more Skrull/Kree conflicts if that is continued in The Marvels.

Magneto's a comic book "OMEGA LEVEL MUTANT." I think we can just say he had a longer adult life than a normal human.

Fassbender’s Magneto did only look like he aged 8 years in the span of 30 lol

they all did, by the time Dark Phoenix happens it's the 90s and McAvoy should look like Patrick Stewart and Fassbender should look like Ian McKellen haha

They must have had a brutal time in the late 90s. Lol

I don’t recall audiences caring too much about Fassbender and the others not aging much. There were a few articles against it but I never heard many fans complain about it so Marvel could very well be planning that explanation with Magneto.

I’d be interested in what potential actors could portray him. Obviously a Jewish actor, but I’m not sure what age group Marvel will go with. He’d probably want to look somewhat older than the core X-Men just for the sake of addressing the difference visually. Maybe mid-40s? Magneto probably won’t be a physically demanding role so that helps.

Edit: Fan casting has Adam Brody but that’s the only name I’m seeing that would be a “wow” factor.

I was actually thinking re: the aging thing, we know Magneto can use his powers to manipulate the iron in people's blood, maybe that's how he controls his aging. He slows down his blood circulation enough to age far slower than normal people do. That's how that works right?

I’m not something of a scientist myself, but that sounds reasonable enough IF they care to explain more than “dude’s a mutant.”

As for actors, what about Liev Schreiber?

I’ve always pictured Magneto with a thinner jawline, but Liev does have that glare and he would look pretty convincing and intimidating with the helmet on. I’d support it.

That'd be some impressive range within the X-Men world, from Sabretooth to Magneto lol

Lol when I was initially having this convo with someone, they were like "well you'd have to explain it though!" and my counterpoint was:

Yes, part of writing a movie is explaining elements of the movie, and they've had no problems explaining a gentleman turning green and 8 feet tall and mega mega strong so i think they'd be fine.

Magneto doesn't need to be white. There have been other genocides since the holocaust. Seems like an easy thing to write around. Hell, write it about an Iraqi kid who survived the invasion and saw his parents murdered by troops. Too easy.

the MCU exists in a world where major cities are regularly pummeled by monsters there could easily be a Hitler 2

I dunno how many Jewish comic book characters there are so I don't know how I feel about the prospect of getting rid of one of the most prominent ones.

According to Wikipedia, other big names in the Marvel Jewish superhero community are Doc Samson, Gert from Runaways, Iceman, Songbird, and the Thing. Who knew.

I only didn't mention her because I assumed everyone already knew.

I also totally meant to add "besides anyone associated with Magneto" to my post to cover Polaris, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch too.

Magneto being Jewish is VERY important to the character. Whatever other decisions one makes with the character, that should NOT be lost. Like, to the point where, if you’re not gonna honor that, just use someone else from the world of the X-Men. It’s a very wide and deep franchise, so you’ve got plenty of options.

The same applies to Kitty Pryde, while we’re at it.
