How does the album stack up to others?

First thoughts: Not as cinematic as previous albums, and it feels a lot shorter. But there's a lot of great songs on here. Need more spins before I can form any real opinion.

Is it better than Astoria? A part from the title track all the songs on that album fell short for me.

I’m digging the three songs released for this era so here’s to hoping the album is a step up. Will listen at work tomorrow, didn’t realise it was out so soon.

  5. First listen has me thinking it's my least favorite MT album but there's still some bangers on here. Trying not to be disappointed over all, but the songs don't quite feel as fleshed out to me on first spin. Not as catchy or big.

  6. I really like that "I'm just a drink away from honesty" line.

Hard to imagine that this will ever be considered bad, per se, but if they were going away from the cinematic aspect I would hope they tried to go further than what people are saying. I’ll reserve judgement until I hear it though!

  8. The middle/end is way better than the first few songs imo.

Personally I’m loving this so far. Echoes of You is still fantastic, and Don’t Miss Me is really resonating with my lyrically.

Glimmer is a future hit (even if the way the hook starts bizarrely reminds me of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” lmao)

This album really is all breakup anthems huh... honestly I wasn’t ready to feel this much today lol

The Death of Me is stunning... and this isn’t even the closer yet!! It FEELS like the closer. This is gonna be special I think

Apparently the closer is nuts lmao

  13. I wish the entire album was like the last minute of "Death of Me" and the closer.

I’d go as far as saying it’s their best closer. Oh yeah, I’m going there already.

It’s definitely not their best overall album from my first two listens, but the closing track is probably the most a song of theirs has ever emotionally impacted me.

I wasn’t expecting this album to be so emotionally connected by the breakup theme... it really resonated in a way I needed right now. I get the critique of most of the album not being as theatrical, but I think the closer being so incredible goes a way towards rectifying that. It’s my personal favorite closing track by them already and that’s saying A LOT.

  19. It's not even close to "MPIII." It's not even in the same ballpark of tying an entire album together in one song. That take is so hot someone should call the fire department.

  21. The last album was all about that breakup too, he spent most of the press tour talking about it. So, I was expecting the same theme given the singles.

It doesn't though. The album's 41 minutes long and that's the only time they reached the highs of what they've done before. It's a good album, it's not up there with their best. Ever After and MPT are crazy better constructed albums with much better songs.

That’s fair. I love MPIII and think they’ve always had incredible closing tracks... this just happens to be the most I’ve enotionally connected with a closer they’ve had, not taking away anything from those other tracks.

Also, at least from my initial impression I’d argue that this album is still VERY interconnected thematically. There may not be *as many* direct compositional connections (although Killing Kind still has great callbacks), but I think the lyrical themes still resonate a lot more in the closer from how they’re set up in the rest of the album. I’d probably agree with you that MPIII is more impressive as a musical piece, but my argument is mostly my subjective connection and how much this song made me feel. It’s been a while since an album closer hit me like that.

  23. It's about as good of a pop-punk song as you could write and all the reprises bringing that entire album together elevate it even further. I'm still in awe they pulled that off with how much it shifts and turns and re-does the earlier songs in new ways. It's insane.

I’d argue the highs of this album still are on par with their past albums, but it’s more inconsistent. There’s a handful of tracks on here that don’t do a ton for me which usually isn’t the case for MT... but the standouts are still so damn good.

Not only that, but the leap in quality from Fix Me to THAT song is incredible.
