is that how the philly accent sounds or does the suburb have it's own thing

Yeha the way I think of it...Philly is like a less harsh version of the classic New York italian, but with a few of those weird “O” sounds that Cooper uses in that video thrown in. And then Delco basically is the Philly accent that just has a slightly more hickish/white trashy sound to it. Like it took that O sound in the Philly accent and really stresses it, and it leans into the wooder thing, etc.

My family is from Delco and Berks county so I had some of that accent growing up, but as far as I can tell I don’t have it at all anymore. I do do the “didjeet?” Thing that Cooper drops in that video though lol

just kind of said this in the last post but basically what Cooper sounds like in that video is straight Philly, and Delco is basically the same thing but with some slight changes that people around here who have a better ear for it would def be able to tell youre “from the sticks” and not from Philly proper haha.

I’m not the best person to speak on this though because I definitely grew up thinking that people from around here had no accent.

Lol I’m definitely overthinking this now trying to figure out what I still say with the accent. So far I’ve decided I’m pretty sure I say “gas” the Philly way, and while I don’t say “wooder” for normal water, I do slip sometimes and say “Wooder ice” instead of water ice.

i've basically erased my midwestern accent, except for when I get a little buzzed or am around family. my wife points it out occasionally. troubling stuff.

This discussion really reminds me of when actors attempt the Boston accent - it always seems like a failed endeavor from the start given that the whole thing is kinda predicated on linguistic laziness, so the more actors think about it and try harder and harder, the further from it they get.

I'm not denying that a Philly / Delco accent exists or saying that they did or didn't get it right in this show, but even in that Bradley Cooper video I don't really hear the accent.

I'm about to watch the first episode right now.

Bradley Cooper does a decent example of the accent. It’s pretty apparent.

Yeah you can really hear it in the O’s in that video...”Goe down” and “Hoe-gee”...but honestly the way it’s pronounced it’s hard to spell phonetically lol. “Gew” maybe.

yeah that’s not a bad description honestly.

philly people would kill me for saying this but basically it kind of sounds like if the New York Italian accent and the Yinzer accent had a baby, it would be Philly/Delco

A super strong yinzer accent is unmatched. It’s almost not understandable.

I watched the first episode and 20 minutes of the second episode. This is phenomenal so far. Whoever described this as an American Broadchurch (so far, at least) really nailed it.

I hear the accent more watching the actual show. They say "water" really funny, and there are a few more words and phrases that really stuck out to me that I can't remember right now.

Still haven’t watched it, but I find so much discussion on an accent vs the actual plot interesting.

the plot/mystery is fine so far but really it’s a lot of fun watching Winslet in this role and that’s what’s keeping me locked in.

Yeah, Winslet is fantastic in this so far. Her performance has been riveting.

I thought the interview scene in episode 2 was extremely well done, where it starts off leaning comedic with the garbage all of the other kids are saying and just how teenagers can kind of be inherently funny and awkward, but then it transitions hard to the girl's best friend. The gravity of the situation really hit home in that moment.

I really dug the first episode a lot but I’m pretty sure rolling rock doesn’t come on draft anymore so I can no longer continue to watch.

One of the Delco bars i used to somewhat frequent had $2 Rolliing Rock drafts all day every day. It was surprisingly tasty for a shitty cheap beer. But I haven’t been there in 2+ years so I didn’t realize it wasn’t available on draft anymore

rolling rock is delicious. I actually have the “33” tattooed on me cause it’s mine and my friends go to camping beer. I don’t think it’s on draft anymore but I could be wrong.
