Cool news: Autumn Burchett (a non-binary, trans player) has won the Mythic Championship (formerly known has the Pro Tour) yesterday. He/she does not identify as a woman I believe, so there's still room for someone who does to win one for the first time.

I hope this educates all the smelly xenophobic MTG players (and gamers in general).

 

fun finals. the middle game was really intense. kudos to autumn and ikawa, really enjoyed that.

i havent watched the autumn vs reid duke match but I expect that to be fun too

 

is there some history of discrimination in the magic community? i dont go to paper events that much.

 

Some high profile personalities have been banned by the DCI for toxic behavior (Ali Aintrazi for asking a trans player if he could touch her breasts and making fun of her, Jeremy Hambly from Unsleeved Media for harassing a female cosplayer so bad that she quit the game, etc.).

More generally, a lot of players still get upset / ashamed when losing to women.

 

started playing arena again. draft is so fun. i feel like that’s lowkey one of the best things about arena - rotating the sets for limited. right now it’s rivals of ixalan.

drafted a golgari tempo deck (which i didnt even think was possible). there’s an instant in green that costs 1G that does +1/+1 and a card draw. and i had 3 of those and then i had the 1B vampire that draws a card (and lose 1 life) when it enters the battlefield.

probably in my top 2 favorite decks ive drafted. the other one is a dimir control that just recycled Disinformation Campaign

 

36 walkers in WAR i am so hyped. there’s so many ways this could go wrong but I am excited.

 

already preordered the challenger decks. all 4 are currently 80 bucks on TCGPlayer right now so that's awesome. that's the only time I really get into paper magic because it's cheap.

planning to buy a second copy of the izzet deck just to complete the playset of checklands, and an extra arclight. i could either sell those or try to build the arclight deck.

 

well I'm gonna look into those

 

they aren’t as good as last year’s for sure. but they are still a good product for people who wants to look into standard.

some cool notes:
- izzet deck has 3 checklands, 2 niv, and some other 2 of’s so i feel like buying 2 copies of those will still net you some good value financially speaking
- izzet sb has entrancing melody which is a part of what makes Mono Blue Tempo a bit expensive rn, so it feels like that’s another reason to buy it
- the mono white one is only missing 2 benalia, 2 legion’s landing and 2-4 copies venerated loxodon but i think it’s close to the competitive lists
-golgai is the most underwhelming for sure. only 2 copies of jadelight, no carnage tyrant, no vraska’s, no vivien. hard to upgrade imo
- mono red is only missing sets of risk factor, skewer the critics, and light up the stage

aside from the golgari deck, i think it’s easy to upgrade the challenger decks (expect land ofc). i mostly just play in arena and i main mono red and mono blue so i’ve played a lot of variants of those haha.

 

Owen Turtenwald got removed from the Mythic Invitational thingy on the eve of the tournament. He supposedly did some questionable stuff, but the call-out is cryptic and litteraly says "it's a secret".

Bummer.

 

I thought it was for health reasons but it looks like it’s something else. I read some of the comments on the internet and I immediately got angry.

what a fucking toxic community.

 

I hit gold in Arena and basically just go 50/50 with wins now. I don't really have enough in the deck to be truly competitive. Basically just playing the G/U merfolk deck but trimmed it down to a lot of one and two drops.

 

I’m in the know. He basically has been asking girls out via text and DM repeatedly to the point where he’s pushing it. I don’t think it’s malicious but it is certainly intrusive l.

 

Thanks for the heads up. It doesn't sound that bad, buf if WOTC had to drop him from the biggest tournament ever, the actual messages he sent must be pretty toxic... Yikes.

 

it got him kicked out of mythic so it probably is malicious. tbh i don’t care about owen or the drama. i am worried about how people in the community are responding, already defending owen while being dismissive of the women who are affected. the kind of message that is promoting. as someone who is male and had always felt safe in this community, i don’t think i even have a say in this. i’d rather just shut up and listen. and not speculate at all.

Wizards had a lot to lose by doing this and I wouldn’t just downplay this. i don’t trust them in some of their product decisions, but this is way different and I’ll take their word for this easily

i’m not really pointing this towards anyone in this thread, just so disappointed with the mtg community rn.

i impulse bought death baron and gy marshal hoping there will be some zombie meta in the future. if that doesn't happen i'll probably just build the mono black deck from last time. loved that deck a lot.

yeah this set is going to be insane. i am fully on board

the transition from Dominaria -> M19 (is alright) -> GRN -> RNA -> WAR is just great. one of the best ones we've had in a while

 

Kind of want to give MTG Arena a try since I don't have anyone near me I can play with.
