    set our hearts ablaze

Today I woke up to this lovely chemical/melted plastic smell from the fire in Maywood -- 20 miles away from here? I can't imagine what it smells like in the city.

It's so dang hot. Drove west on the 134 and it looks like Echo Park is on fire. Didn't look good.

Just moved to Los Angeles, thread seems pretty dead so not really expecting a reply, but I was wondering if anyone could talk to me about living here? Grew up in South Texas, so this is all pretty new to me.

    So assuming that this weekend...

What do you want to know? To which part of the city did you move?

I'm living in South LA - I guess just what spots I should check out (be that restaurants or clubs and the like). Not sure to be honest, living in LA is so different from I'm from. Adjusting is being a little difficult for me at the moment. Not used to living in a large and crowded place.

There are so many good places to eat and it's honestly worth checking out a lot of the smaller hole in the wall places. I've only experienced bits and pieces of LA but there's a burger place I used to go to with my ex, this shitty looking old drive through too, but it's called Patra's and it's awesome.

    Home

There was a pretty bomb seafood place we used to go to too but I can never remember what it's called. Santa Monica's really pretty for kitschy beach dates and there's the boardwalk with amusement park rides. Venice is fun to walk around too, good people-watching. Hollywood is fun to walk around at night too, you should wander Hollywood and Highland and see the tourist shit if you're into that.

I'm most definitely going to look into Patra's (checked out their website), thank you for the recommendation. I'm a huge fan of burger places, so this seems right up my alley. Hopefully I can go and check it out this weekend. My girlfriend tells me that there's really cool places to eat at Santa Monica, we haven't gone yet but I'm pretty excited to check it out when we have the chance. I went to Universal Studios a few days after first arriving here, but I didn't enjoy it too much. I'm not a big theme park/amusement park kind of person, to be honest (much to the chagrin of my S.O.). Thanks for the tips though, hopefully I'll begin to feel more at home here as the time passes.

Very excited I'm moving to LA in 16 more days!
Still dont have an apartment lined up though lol. I've been searching all day everyday and cant find anything that meets my preferences. Anyone have suggestions on where to look online? I'm looking to live in Los Feliz.

Just gonna throw out there that Guisados has the best tacos

  11. Depends on your price range, honestly. LA facebook groups can be helpful.

  12. Food:
If you're in Burbank, check out Porto's or the Donut Prince. (Everyone tells you about Donut Friend and their fancy donuts, but if you're looking for the best regular old 65 cent fresh donut in the valley 23 hours a day, this is where you go.)
Santa Monica, check out Patrick's Roadhouse.
Any Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles location - it's an LA staple.
El Segundo, the Farm Stand and California Fish Grill.
Culver City, try Tito's Tacos or the Culver Hotel. (For food.)
Manhattan Beach, Four Daughters is a great brunch spot.
Hawthorne, Zacatecas has the best burritos and Chubby Rice is a pretty legit Chinese-fusion spot. Both lower on the price scale, both basically hole-in-the-walls.
    Downtown - Chego is great.
West LA - Lenny's Deli is fantastic and open late. Most of those old-school delis are great, actually, but they thankfully do exist outside of Hollywood.
Scotty's on the Strand is a great greasy spoon breakfast spot in Hermosa, since you're in South LA.
If you're in Hollywood, a) I'm sorry and b) The Griddle Cafe is a good spot.

    Nightlife:
I only go to Silverlake or Hollywood for shows if I can help it, because they're a bitch to get to from the South Bay but that's where a lot of the venues are. For instance, tonight at the Echo in Silverlake is Emo Nite, so I'm dragging myself over there for that.

Downtown is great if you just want to bar crawl on foot - start anywhere, just make sure you stay where it's relatively lit. As in, with lighting. Downtown has been revitalized, but the transition hasn't fully taken yet and it can be sketchy.

Downtown Long Beach is also a treasure trove of great bars and food spots. Good for wandering on foot/bar crawling.

Dockweiler Beach (between Manhattan and Venice beaches) has evening bonfire pits, which can be pretty cool. Check out LACMA and the Tar Pits - they're fun to wander at night. The Natural History Museum's First Friday events are a lot of fun (first Friday of the month, as the name implies). The list kinda goes on. It really completely just depends on what you're looking for.

Culver Hotel is fucking fantastic. It's also pretty pricey.

  19. I haven't done most of those things. I might've said this already: living in the Valley, I take it for granted that LA is so close. I'm hardly ever in LA; most of my hangout spots are either in Northridge or Burbank (or somewhere in between), mostly out of convenience--I went to Northridge for college so most of my friends are in the area.

Ah ok so I'm about to have a panic attack cuz I land in LA in 2 weeks and I still don't have an apartment lined up. I wanna be in or very close to Los Feliz since that is where my only friends in Cali live, but there are very few options in my price range there and the ones that are won't do business with me since I am from out of state.

What are safe, good and affordable neighborhoods close by that I should check out?

That area (Los Feliz/Silverlake/Echo Park) is expensive af. You might have to look at neighborhoods just outside of LA.

Burbank/North Hollywood/Glendale? You're not going to find much on a budget in Los Feliz. Will you have a car? I went without a car for three years here and was still able to get to that area pretty easily from NoHo via the red line and a bike.

Yep I'm shipping my car out there, can't imagine not having one! I have a glimmer of hope with this one apartment I found right in the center of Los Feliz.....submitted my application so fingers crossed. If not I may have to look into Glendale. Doesnt seem to far from Los Feliz and the prices are really affordable.

When I'd first arrived in California in early May, me and my girlfriend were living in Panorama City. In early June we'd moved out to South LA and we're still here now. It's crazy how different the environments between the two places are when they don't even seem to be too far away from each other. I left college needing 3 more semesters to finish, my move to California from Texas was sudden :( Northridge is where I'm thinking of going to apply for school.

Best of luck in finding a place, hope you get accepted for the apartment :)
