The vial of testosterone is safely in my medicine cabinet. I keep looking at it, like it might disappear somehow. I know it won't, but I feel like I'm looking at a little 1ml miracle each time.

I also keep thinking about names. I like my initials. The J and B are taken care of, but a new S has been tricky.

I think Sidney is one of the coolest names ever.

 

just make sure no one calls you Sid, I don't think you want to be the villain in Toy Story

 

That doesn't bother me nearly as much as this... Okay so I picked Jeffery for a middle name, after my cousin who died back in 2003. Sidney Jeffery does not roll off the tongue as well as I'd like. Then in my head I think "Steph Jeff" and I feel like Julia Gulia hahaha. Honestly Silas Jeffery is the only one that doesn't make me cringe. Which is not the way to pick a new name, but yeah.

And just in case anyone was wondering, there is no way I would go by Jeff or have my family call me that, because I'm not here to replace him, just honor him, and there's still a big hole in my family where he should be. Too painful for a lot of us.

 

I think Silas Jeffery has a good ring to it.

Though even if you prefer Sidney, how often are people going to be calling you by your first and middle name at one time?

 

Honestly I'm not sure which I prefer. I'm having my therapist try out using Silas with me. You make a very good point though, as I am well past the age where my mom would use my full name when I'm in trouble lol

 

Popping in to say that I think the name Silas is elegant as hell.

That and I'm having trouble figuring out my own pronouns as of late. For a long time it's been that I'll respond to any and all pronouns but as of late I've been considering using feminine pronouns exclusively. It's just a matter of me not wanting to pressure others around me and also that I'm still fine with he/him pronouns... I dunno, we'll see what I do I guess.

@BirdPerson I know you said you weren't ready for the Facebook post so I thought I'd just give you a heads up that Facebook says Steph changed *his* profile picture, idk if you were hoping to keep the pronoun change from people as well

 

Thank you for the heads up. Totally forgot I'd changed that, go drunk me from 2 months ago. I have this feeling that most people won't even notice that or will just be like "whoops!" My mom liked my photo so maybe this will reinforce that I am serious about transition - not that I've had any inkling from her that she'd have a problem, but many people like things in theory and then do not like them in reality...and I haven't told the fam that I officially got my first shot.



Also back to that straw poll, people: Reading "Steph changed his profile picture" makes me lean heavily toward Silas. I met up with some other FTM guys after my shot and introduced myself that way. Felt kinda weird but it's still new after 33 years of birth name.

 

It'll feel weird for a while, but use it enough and you'll reach a point where you feel weird to have ever used anything else :D.

Not trying to discourage you from your choice or anything, but just giving you my experience on the whole name thing - if you pick a name that really stands out/is very uncommon, obviously you will stand out as well, and in my experience having a very uncommon name will sorta tip people off that you might be trans. Again, not trying to discourage you - it's your name and if you really like it, that's all that matters and you should pick it. It all depends on what you want out of your transition - if you ultimately wanna go stealth, having a more common name will help with that.

 

I figure that will happen at some point. Instead right now I shake hands as Silas and then the barista calls the order for Stephanie because that's on my debit card, woo.

I've thought about that name commonality so much, because I definitely know what you are talking about - so I know you are not trying to discourage! I went back and looked at men's names from my birth year. I wrote down every male S name that seemed okay to me at first read. I'm still not sure if I want to try to go stealth, but I figure if I don't feel like explaining, I'll just say my mom liked the book Silas Marner or something.

 

There's a rumour that Abbi Jacobson and Carrie Brownstein are a thing and I want so badly for it to be true
