Showed my dad Casino Royale; I hadn't watched it again since it came out, so I didn't remember very much of it. If you asked me earlier what my favorite of Craig's Bond films was, I'd have probably said Skyfall--now I'm not so sure. CR is not as fun and homage-y, but that's probably what makes it the better film.

edit: also saw Doctor Strange. If you follow the Representation thread, you can probably guess how I feel about it. I just want to point out the fun coincidence that I watched Mads as a villain in two different film franchises within the span of a week.

Maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinions thread but whatever, I'm not afraid: Clue is the best board game based movie of all time

    Does Jumanji count?

Not that it's very good. Just curious if it counts.

    The Meddler - 7.5/10
    Blood Father - 8.5/10
    Last Man Standing* - 5/10
    La Femme Nikita* - 8/10
    Leon: The Professional* - 9/10
    The Fifth Element* - 9/10
    Juggernaut - 6.5/10
    Time Bandits - 8/10
    Dracula (1931) - 7/10
    Galaxy Quest - 8/10
    Firefox - 5.5/10
In the Valley of Elah - 9/10

Overall a good week even without the rewatches of my three favourite films from Luc Besson. The Meddler was a nice enough comedy drama with a good cast but nothing overly special. Blood Father is an action film that is far deeper emotionally than I ever expected with a cracking lead performance by Mel Gibson. Rewatched Last Man Standing to see why my original review stated that I didn't like it and even though I liked it slightly more than first time round it is still incredibly flawed but the action is at least great. Bought both La Femme Nikita and Leon: The Professional with the former not going up in how much I like it though the latter has. Also enjoy The Fifth Element more now as well and can definitely see the style from that film in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Juggernaut could be lazily put into the disaster genre that was popular in the 1970s but it isn't as character focused or overblown like those films but is way more tense and actually pretty decent cast wise. Time Bandits is weird, all over the place plot wise but it has a solid cast and great production especially when you consider the small budget for how much is put in the film. Dracula is the oldest film I have seen (take that however you want) and despite the aged production and way of filming it still has its moments and it was interesting to see what future films were influenced by. Galaxy Quest was really rather funny, well cast and clearly was in love with what it was parodying which helps the atmosphere of the film feel a lot more fun. Firefox is your typical Cold War thriller just with a sci-fi twist and it is alright but nothing remarkable and Clint Eastwood has directed and starred in far better. In the Valley of Elah capped off the week in an impressive way and was far more emotionally deep and character driven than I expected, really doesn't give in to the kind of mystery drama cliches like plenty of other films do.

Should pass 300 films watched next week and hopefully got a cinema trip in the pipeline which should be fun.

I wonder how long Netflix will keep its DVD by mail service around. When I used to have Netflix I always preferred the DVD's because they had everything; I am usually working on some sort of list or project so the random streaming selection never worked for me.

same, I was doing 1-2 per week and had a queue like 30-40 movies long. my sister and i would actually get into arguments because we'd keep bumping movies up in the queue ahead of the others. back when the only way to get a new movie was to watch one, was when i was watching the most.

Yep. It's interesting 'cause you can keep the DVD's for as long as you want, if I remember correctly, but I felt like I had more of a responsibility to watch them.

I used to get 3 movies at a time and sent one back every day, so six movies a week. I could never keep up with that schedule now.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped it which is a shame because like with the LoveFilm service I use so much more is on offer physically than by streaming on the likes of Amazon Video.

It is inevitable, but there are large parts of this country without an appropriate Internet speed for streaming. There are actually a handful of physical Blockbuster stores left because people either do not know how to stream or are unable to.

Yeah I hear internet speeds aren't great in the US which isn't a problem for where I am in the UK but the amount available via streaming is way less luckily I might have found an alternative which is more expensive but better than nothing.

It's not a chain, but in my hometown there is a totally functional and thriving video store and it is amazing. After movies are out for a couple months, they put them up for sale at a discount. I have bought so many awesome blurays from them at such a good price.

I sometimes miss Blockbuster, if you're not sure what movie you want to watch on Netflix there's so much nonsense to sort through, no Boat Trip isn't the romantic comedy I'm looking for

I don't own any physical media of any kind. I know a lot of cinephiles love collecting Criterions and other Blu-Rays, but the clutter would bother me.

I buy a lot of physical media on blu-ray, but mostly only Criterion or classic films. My university has an incredible film library too, which I've been taking advantage of a lot the last few months. Same with the public library. Streaming is mostly useless for me, except Fandor.

That said, I do dl a ton too, but mostly for films that aren't available any other way.

Yeah, I mean, it's just preference, but Criterion packaging especially is typically so beautiful I have a hard time resisting. I've moved on to digital music, as most computers don't even have disc drives anymore, but I just love having something tangible when it comes to movies. Although, I have a fairly impressive Bluray collection and I am now seeing people buy 4K Ultra HD discs and, though it'll be a long while, I do not look forward to the day when Blurays are obsolete.
