I've always wanted to see that. For awhile I put it off because I liked the similarly named Marx Brothers movie too much

But there may never have been anyone better at light comedy than Grant ever

Just watched Rams. What a beautiful film.

@Morrissey have you seen The Treasure? If so, curious about your thoughts on that one

I liked it quite a bit. I do not remember it as well as I should, and I will probably have to review parts of it before 2016 is over, but it did a great job at highlighting the desperation that people can feel and the ways it can drive them to do things that are seemingly irrational and against their own economic interest. Porumboiu kind of gets forgotten a bit from the Romanian New Wave. If you have not seen it, 12:08 East of Bucharest has a lot of the same type of comedy.

Though the Irish side of the plot doesn't work nearly as well as the American side this still took me by surprise. Really well acted, looks great, plenty of likable characters, beautiful score and even has plenty of laughs to coincide with the drama.

  6. Some peeps in the English Department at my college had a screening of Mulholland Drive, followed by a discussion. I'm pretty sure I've seen Blue Velvet, but I can't remember it at all. Anyway, this was my first time watching Mulholland Drive, and I really enjoyed it. I mean, I guess enjoyment isn't the right word. I don't know. Satisfied. (This was part of our discussion, enjoyment vs satisfaction.) I like how it gave me a lot of things to think about, haha. Not sure if I dig Lynch's style yet, I need to see more of his films. Right now a lot of it feels like odd for odd sake. Which is fine, but yeah. I love how a lot of this one was fragmented, disjointed, and cyclical, though.

The Magnificent Seven remake was surprisingly satisfying. Obviously not even close to the original or to Seven Samurai, but if you go in with that mindset why are you seeing it? Some great, quippy cameraderie. Well-filmed with a score that does a great job of paying homage to one of the most famous film scores in history without being shackled by it. And Denzel as the badass to end all badasses. Plenty to like.

Transformers is just as bad as it thought I would be. It is about fifteen minutes so far, and we have been bombarded with the laziest of racial stereotypes. I am playing chess while the students are stuck with me for four and a half hours due to the ACT, but this just makes it more miserable. The students love it, though.

This job has forced me to watch Jurassic World may more times than any person should have to. It gets sillier each time (the mustache-twirling villainy of the scientist from the first film is worse every time) but a lot of the kids pointed out the absurdity of so many of the plot conventions. There is hope for the next generation.

Those two movies you listed above is fun as hell, I get that your the serious indie drama movie guy but do you enjoy any action/blockbuster films?

I'm as populist as anyone in this thread, but Jurassic World BLOWS.

They are both among the worst movies I have had to watch this year. The genre of film is unimportant; the first two Jurassic Park films understood how to build suspense far more than this film.

It's cool to hear you say you liked Lost World. I thought everyone hated that movie. It had a ton of cool moments in it, even though no Grant :tear:

But Jurassic World still had a Raptor/Momma Rex tag team battle so I have to love it. I wasn't looking for a citizen kane when I went in.

Well.....it's a pretty fun movie with awesome moments. If you are looking for a character driven story with dramatic impact, no. I don't get the hate the movie gets because that's not what the Jurassic movies ever were...

It's entertaining in the sense that they clearly don't understand what made the first great, I suppose.

I dunno. There are plot holes in the first one too and stupid character motivations. I think if they released JW first in the 90s and JP now, everyone would be saying the same thing.

no. just no, no revisionist history would make a difference. one is exactly what you want in a smart summer blockbuster, the other is JW. they couldn't be more different in my eyes

Jurassic World gets more painful every time I watch it. There are random, silly fun moments but it's such an incompetent movie overall. Easily the worst of the franchise.
