The way scenes are shot and lit, basically.

If it looks beautiful, it's at least partly (and often entirely) due to the cinematographer

oh yeah, Breillat actually talks about how the name was very important to her. i think it's also very important to her conflict with her sister, her take on sexuality, and her sexual valuation of herself.

Basically if you want to think about cinematography (btw total amateur/fan perspective, not expert at all) think about how the lighting and composition of this shot adds something extra to the scene:

As opposed to something more workmanlike:

    Watch Lawrence of Arabia.

That, my friends, is cinematography defined.

  5. Watched Inside Llewyn Davis for the first time tonight. What a treat.

Lean's movies are, like, cinematography porn.

Probably my least favorite Coen Brothers movie I've seen, but I think that speaks more to how good their other movies are

  8. I loved it. Still need to see A Serious Man but otherwise I'm mostly up to date on their filmography except for one or two of their early films.

I need Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn't There, The Ladykillers and Miller's Crossing. I really should finish off their career.

The Big Lebowski will always be their best. It is everything a comedy should be.

I love Hudsucker and Intolerable and think they are majorly underrated. But a lot of that might stem from being a fan of the golden age genres they're tributing with those movies.

seems under rated for some reason. the classics are lost in discussion.

I would love for more people to watch/be talking about older films. You know I'm always down to talk about them if you watch more.

I feel like you would dig John Sturges' movies for some reason. I don't know why it's just hitting me now all of a sudden. I know you've seen one or two, but yeah.

Hudsucker is probably the best tribute to Frank Capra there's ever going to be.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is one hell of a fun movie. I rewatched it last night and it was just as good as I remembered.

The Professionals is a good solid "guy's flick" with a killer cast and lots of tough guy iconography I enjoyed.

Manhattan Murder Mystery is too modest to be a top-tier Woody Allen, but it's really damn funny. One of his funniest of the 90s, which I've now seen almost all of. The hand-held camera is also kind of distinct for Woody.

Its so bad and Lynch is so good that I can't help but believe he purposely made it horrible. I know its probably some dissonance on my part but it is jarringly bad, it doesn't make sense for a filmmaker who was really starting to hit his stride--he made Blue Velvet next!
