Holy shit Taylor just changed my life

 

Going between this and the other drama thread of the night is like watching two parallel earths collide.

 

I'm legit curious as to how this will play out. That said, the memes on Twitter right now are insane, like this is crazy as to how much this has blown up. Not really with cool with the slurs or anything like that though, that's a bit much.

 

this is kinda loaded so i'm going to address each point.

so after thinking about it for a minute, I'm open to considering that the way there's a possibility that she didn't know she was being recorded. she says she didn't know and I don't have a real reason not to believe her (except that she's lied about this conversation even existing, which makes her a less reliable source in my eyes but whatever).

however, i think it's garbage to conflate her phone call with Kanye being recorded as if it makes her essentially dragging him through the mud justifiable.

the drama that has existed between them is extremely complex and I'm aware that I'm not the best person to talk about it. but for as worried as you are about Taylor being called slurs online (a point I will address shortly), you dont seem to care about the racist shit that has been stemmed at Kanye and justified in part because of his relationship with Taylor.

Finally, I'm not sure that what Kim did was bullying. the internet's reaction? sure. but assuming this back's up their side of the story, I think it's valid for her or Kanye to try and share their side of the story. And I don't personally condone Taylor being called a slur over this. Do I think it's shady on her part? Completely. But that doesn't justify whatever trolling she may receive.

I dunno I just feel like it's all still a gross set of lines and whether or not Taylor approved doesn't really change that in my eyes

Sure he didn't have to call and ask for approval but he also didn't have to make the lines at all, and I don't think the lines were a dealbreaker in the song whatsoever

I don't feel like this changes much of the end result at all

 

For the record, I'm still in the both parties came away from the interaction with a different misunderstanding, camp.

To me it did seem like he was seeking some sort of approval, not just to release it on twitter. And she also never cautioned him about a strong misogynistic message unless Kim cut that part out, but Taylor was gushing pretty hard so I'm not sure when she would've said that, especially since it says she didn't know about the "bitch famous" part yet and she seemed happy with the lyric he read. At first I wondered if there were multiple phone calls and she changed her mind and warned him, but Taylor herself said there was only one

 

I write over two dozen notes or messages a day in drafts, so I'm the wrong person to ask.

 

I feel the need to share that my most recent note says "Dress as server, ask people how their food tastes".

We didn't actually hear him tell her about the "that bitch" line or hear him ask her to release it on Twitter - which I don't think he's denied happened? - either, so it's impossible to know short of the entire phone call getting released without any editing whatsoever.

 

As I said, there is a critique to be made here, particularly the degree to which Taylor partakes in the mass marketing of white femininity and her use of it to great effect. With regard to the Cosby tweet, I think, yes, a lot of people were upset; however, there was a lot of understanding as well. People indulged in understanding why he said what he said in the context of being a black man in America. Similarly, I think we should attempt to understand the path Taylor took in the context of being a woman in America, with the various pressures that exist. Again, I'm much more likely to say, fuck white people, but when I see rhetoric like "play the victim", the usage of sexist curse words, the reliance on disbelief as the status quo when it comes to claims women make, etc., I find it incredibly troubling and toxic. And this is not to say that Kanye hasn't experienced this as well to a significant degree as a result of society's general orientation towards anti-blackness. The complexities of the intersecting dynamics require us to have nuance when approaching this, though; for if we just jump headlong into the mode I am currently seeing on social media, then I think we are doing the work of helping to entrench racism and sexism in some indirect or unconscious way. Beyond these two millionaires, who can afford protection, these dynamics have ramifications and the most marginalized people will suffer if we do not ensure that our approach is consistent, nuanced and thorough in all situations.

 

I wish black and white people would stop hogging all the intetsectionality and leave some for the other minorities.

I mean the lie is where she says he didn't ask for approval and was only calling for the twitter thing. Clearly the video shows him asking for approval and saying he values their friendship and doesn't want to upset her. So to me, that portion of her statement is a lie off the bat. I believe her when she says she didn't know about the "this bitch" line until the song was released, so she cautioned against the misogynistic message of the lyric she was gushing about? That part doesn't add up but again, it could've been cut out idk. You're right in that Kim could've posted the whole video unchopped on another platform so her chopping it up on snap is sus as well

 

Well, this was a fun trip through the music forum. Headed back over to the general/political section now. Y'all got a nice spot over here, though.

 

I mean, I'm assuming footage of the call in its entirety does exist although I read somewhere that the conversation was a couple hours long so who knows if that will ever happen unfortunately

 

dang I hope not! I don't even talk to my loved ones for hours at a time on the phone wtf. Unless one of them is like my sister and interprets "...well I'm gonna get going..." as "Let me bring up an entirely new topic to discuss"
