Yea exactly that's what I'm saying. Criticising the album is fine, it's how some of them clearly took glee in doing so and the decision was made before hand. And yea making vague connections to try to associate them with Donald Trump is a little ridiculous. I understand why people are rubbed the wrong way about people like JT and TS not saying anything about Trump, but at the end of the day I fall into the camp that no celebrity should have an obligation to make those kinds of statements, especially when it's never been a part of their brand. And truthfully what could either of them add to the conversation? It's not going to change anyone's mind, so I don't really care.

they're really going full force too, instead of "X amount of albums to listen to this week" it's "6 albums to listen to instead of Justin Timberlake" plus they double-d down on their instagram story too, just ridiculous

The only thing that could make that P4K review more ridiculous is criticizing him for saying “Money is fine” in “Higher Higher” when he said a billion dollars is cooler in “The Social Network.”

That said, this is album is disappointingly forgettable considering all the talent involved. Reminds me of how I was underwhelmed with Lady Gaga’s “Joanne” considering my love for her and Mark Ronson.

Pitchfork shredded all the singles as they were released. Pitchfork was going to Pitchfork this album from the start.

*I still don't think I enjoy the album though*

Pitchfork isn't quite what they used to be ever since Condé Nast took them over. A shame since I genuinely enjoy a lot of their writers.

wish they'd given it to someone else honestly. jamieson reviews big pop releases almost exclusively and from what i've read he tends to make it personal for every single one, even picking personal flaws on artists whose stuff he actually likes. though the "listen to these albums instead of JT" makes me think everyone there is on board with this

Or you know maybe everyone is just tired of JT’s shit. the fucking cornball lyrics, the hypocrisy, the wannabe woke videos...

Joanne grew on my tbh. I'd say it's half good/great and half ok, but that's pretty much how I feel about all her albums. Diamond Heart, A-Yo, Joanne, Dancin In Circles, Million Reasons, Perfect Illusion, and even Angel Down are all songs I play pretty regularly. (Ok sorry for this side tangent, I was listening to the album yesterday.)

Album Review: Justin Timberlake’s ‘Man of the Woods’

"The lowdown is that if you can get past the marketing (which is, admittedly, a tall order), and maybe avoid listening to many of the lyrics or any of the spoken asides (which we’ll get to in a minute), it’s hard to imagine anyone who ever liked Timberlake not having a blast for most of the duration of “Man of the Woods.”"

i think it's rich for uproxx who published a hit piece about the roots last month (?) to also publish that but whatever lol

also their overrated records of 2017 list was so awful and mean that margo price yelled at them. real having their cake and eating it too situation

i'm all for saying things suck and figuring out why they suck but most negative music writing i see these days never actually gets around to to the "figuring out why" part

    I still don't like Filthy.

Oddly enough Flannel has my favorite vocal performance on this record.

Dude this thread is fucking awful lol. Sometimes people hate albums and write about how much they hate them because it's fun to write. Stop caring about critics and maybe you won't spend two pages crying that most critics don't like this embarrassing ass album

I have no sympathy for a man who chose to work with woody Allen in 2017 and you can say it's totally unrelated but it's not and I refuse to conveniently separate art from artist and the tone deafness extends to this album

On the Woody Allen stuff: that's more than fair. Honestly I've heard it mentioned but don't really know exactly what happened, and I assumed it was from a while ago. Didn't realize it was in 2017.

Speaking for myself, like I said I don't really care if critics dislike the album, critics are going to critique. I just think the reviews I've seen for this, and for other albums mentioned have not been focusing on the music, as much as the circumstances around the music. I just prefer to root for success than root for people to flop (e.g. Katy Perry, Taylor Swift). Probably you're right though I should just stop reading reviews of these kinds of things.

I think Justin Timberlake is going to be fine even though Pitchfork is making fun of him, everybody. I bet he appreciates how upset everyone is

It's not wrong that a narrative surrounds an album and most publications go with it either but why care about these publications in the first place when it comes to huge pop acts they aren't making or breaking them. When struggling bands get treated unfairly I get mad but these pop stars are selling hundreds of thousands and albums and playing stadiums regardless of what the fader or some shit thinks so who even cares? It just so happens this album IS terrible so the review narrative has taken shape. It happens in the other direction too for albums that both are and aren't deserving.

Music crit largely sucks and so does this album
