I do think every component of the song is important.

My problem is that most people don't and hyperfocus on one aspect of it only when giving praise.

If 100 hours of work went into the instruments and 5-10 hours of work went into the vocals I just don't see why the vocals would get MORE credit. Equal credit is fine but people straight up ignore most of the creativity that went into the record half the time.

 

But I mean, that's just how my opinion is in general. I don't like artists where the vocals are good but the music is boring. It feels just as incomplete and cliche' to me that way, as when a band with lame vocals and lyrics has amazing songwriting underneath that.

if every component is important then it's okay to dislike a song cause of lyrics and vocals which is all Matt was saying haha. if the rest of the instrumental wasn't strong enough to pick up the slack it is what it is but is not a value judgement on the music vs the vocals / lyrics in opposition to one another

I've genuienly never heard of another band that writes and records and finishes the music and then just turns it over to the vocalist and doesnt change anything musically.
