I believe there are apps, or even google maps makes it quite easy to follow

As a non-New Yorker who has used the subway many times, it seems way more overwhelming than it actually is. If you don't want to just pull a copy of the map and follow the routes yourself, there are a bunch of apps or sites that you can use to plan the route (like, type in the station of origin and the desired destination, and it will tell you exactly where to change over).

 

Google maps has an option for subways but can be a bit wonky in the city with reception. Honestly you can ask the person in the ticket booth and they can direct you usually. Or google it. You'll be more annoyed by the heat down there and how the trains are never on time more than anything else lol.
