yeah, no one was arguing that they've changed radically or anything, that's essentially what has happened re: songwriting, a band who is improving what they're good at while stretching out the ways to use what they're good at, and i think everyone can agree on that to an extent.
obvi i am gonna heavily disagree on calling Of All Things a misstep but i'll recognize im in the minority and say i do think it was necessary for the other two

 

of all things has several very very good songs

Some of their best songs are on OATIWSGT, there actually isn't a bad song on it imo. Just feels more like a compilation than an actual album to me for whatever reason.

 

I mean, the disjointed and jagged nature of the stylistic shifts makes for a lot of jarring moments which i guess accounts for the lack of album like cohesion, but i felt like lyrically there was a lot of threads woven through out that made everything seem like one product to me. lots of running themes, though that is also true in general

 

This record is SOOOOOOO good

I've been listening to it pretty consistently since its release, but the past couple weeks it's finally just clicking with me. I love it.

 

I feel very strongly about this bands ability to continue to progress and grow and write excellent songs and this album is like a big underline any time I listen to it

I like his list, would probably make a greatest hits for them 15 to 16 tracks though, cause those are generally longer anyway and the length of their songs allow a tracklist that size to still be digestible. Would add bride of usher OR see how tame I can be, schley, stairs, and leather jacket OR orange Julius.

 

But mostly a greatest hits on my mind is their discography so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

Would replace Heart Tattoo with Schley but otherwise think that list is perfect.

I've listened to this album so many times, and not just because it's so short. Came out of fucking nowhere for me and is near the top of my AOTY list.

 

did any of you see during that greatest hits exchange, Barry (i think) told someone that they wanted the production on the next album to be "absolutely filthy"

 

Interesting, I think they sort of perfected the clean production style on Cody so I'm happy to hear them go in another direction.

 

Yeah, he said that was the only thing he felt iffy about on the album. Really interested to see what that actually means -- a live esque sounding record or something comparatively lofi or what
