I was listening to the Joyce Manor/Toys That Kill Split, and the alternate versions of See How Tame I Could Be and Bride of Usher seem to have a similar sound/style to the songs on Cody. Maybe it's the way Barry's vocals are kind of smoothed out or the poppier tones, but they sure wouldn't sound out of place (besides being a bit rougher). They're sort of what I'd imagine Cody's demos to sound like (especially Bride of Usher). Just thought it was interesting to see them experiment with a similar style two years before Cody came to be.

I just don't see Cody being really too far out of their normal wheelhouse -- sonically they focused more on some specific influences that have always been there, but I think most of the experimentation stems from song structure (i.e. how many parts in a song/how many times to repeat a part, etc). The exception might be Do You Really Want to Not Get Better? But I think Drainage can reasonably be called a sort of precursor to that kind of song.

This is on the verge of being my official AOTY. Funny, because the top two on my 2014 list was also between The Hotelier and Joyce.

Seeing them tomorrow night. I think they've really become my second favorite band (below only Rise Against). Can't fucking wait. Even if I'm going alone.

Their shows are so much fun, surprisingly never feel like I'm gonna die even though it's always super hot and sweaty and crowded. No one is ever really an asshole and everyone seems to be having fun.

Codependency is the short answer. It's just about the idea of basically not being on your own because you see yourself as being incapable of doing so, and when you find someone who is okay with that, you don't want them to leave. It's def supposed to serve as a condemnation of that sort of behavior because of the unsympathetic light the narrator puts themselves in.

also why does the dog thing come up so often lol what lyric makes you guys think it's about a dog? and maybe constant headache if you also think that, but if it's deadpet device again then i've got nothing really

I guess there's the dog on the cover. Speaking of which, why exactly is the album named Cody? Does it have some kind of inside meaning to the band or...?

I don't want to go all English-major on it and analyze the hell out of its symbolic meaning and stuff, but I'm assuming it has something to do with the idea of growing up and the subsequent fear and anxiety to do so.

so stairs is about a dog bc of the cover but the rest of the songs are about a person? nah, im sure it was a lyric we're interpreting differently. i think Cody is the name of that dog on the album cover, if i remember the teaser right.
are you still talking about stairs? bc I agree. you say it like analyzing the lyrics is boring or something haha
