this is the one band where i constantly expect to love what they do, because i've always loved their albums on first listen and despite the brevity there's a lot to discover, i feel. really special band to me, love Cody a lot. And I really respect their songs being so short and basically being all killer as a result, it's a really cool songwriting approach, even if it isn't on purpose. I think Pinegrove basically does the same thing in terms of cutting out the parts not as good as the best part. to different effect, obvs.

I saw Nic of Gatsby's at the grocery store the other day.

I did not talk to him because I didn't want to bother him.

    That is all.

Tbh I've struggled to get into this album a bit, which is a real shame because I'm a huge JM fan and NHA is one of my favourite albums of the last five years. As I've spent more time with it it's slowly starting to click a bit more, but I still feel it's a bit less diverse and interesting than NHA, or just less geared to my tastes (there are a few songs on here that remind me of something Green Day would have written - I fucking hate Green Day). Fake I.D, Eighteen, Angel in the Snow, Make Me Dumb are all great, the rest is going to take me a little bit more time, I think.

I think less geared to your tastes is more accurate than less diverse. If anything, this might be their most diverse group of songs in terms of things they've tried since Of All Things. I do agree there's more polish but I don't think that detracts from anything. But at least it's happening, albeit slowly!

same for me, i'm really enjoying having like. layers to the songs. not like they never had them, but this album has them in spades it seems, at least the most since Of All Things

im plugging that album so those of you who haven't listened to it will do so lol

I like the record but don't love it, loved nha but that's alright there is still time for this to grow on me. I get a lot of Weezer vibes from this which is cool but I've never Loved weezer just kind of enjoy them from a distance

did you go to any of the ping pong shows? because he definitely talked about that, how with the short songs he only keeps the parts he likes the most

I guess by 'less diverse' I mean that I feel Cody pulls its influences more from pop-punk, particularly 90s-era/influenced pop-punk (Swellers, Green Day etc.), whereas I feel NHA had a few more eclectic influences - there were hints of indie, power pop, new wave, surf, garage rock. I don't really hear those as much on Cody, which is why to me it sounds more straight-forward to me in some ways. I'm not criticising them for going in this direction, I just wasn't expecting it.

that makes no sense to me. cody's main influence seems to be power pop, not pop punk.

I did not because it was like the second day of class that I would've been skipping to go. In retrospect, I fucked up, should've gone

This is interesting because I hear those influences, but I also think that a lot of those influences have shown up in various ways. Like I feel they're pulling a lot from power pop/Weezer and still pulling from the Smiths in some places ((vocally)). I think the approach has kind of been streamlined though, if that makes sense.
