It was a decent performance with absolutely horrendous material to work with.

 

I thought it was an inconsistent performance, and since his intensity was at least an 8 out of 10 for nearly the whole movie it got kind of grating/tiring for me. Phoenix is one of the best, and he does some good stuff in this movie. But he needed smarter collaborators to stick this landing.

 

His performance wouldn't even place in the Top 5 Joaquin Phoenix performances of the decade. It's a shame he got ignored by the Academy for "Sisters Brothers" and "Her" and will likely get a nomination for this, but that's awards for ya.

 

I don’t want to say playing mentally ill is “easy” but it’s definitely one of those kinds of traits that is conducive to the kind of performance that people are quick to interpret as good just bc they’re loud or eccentric or overtly dramatic

 

This performance is solid. It’s overhyped though. Doesn’t even touch his performance in The Master. A nomination won’t be unreasonable but he definitely doesn’t deserve a win.

 

I had him for performance of the year but then I saw marriage story. And then I saw the lighthouse.

 

Yeah I could see Joaquin getting a win if only as a legacy thing, but there have been WAY better performances this year

Adam Driver absolutely mops the floor with Joaquin.

as do those three old people in that one movie from the marvel hater

 

and i stand by joaquin being very good in the movie, but it doesn't need to be seen as any more or less than that

 

It’s a good performance, it’s just very much a “performance”.

 

I agree that all mentioned performances are way more "best actor" worthy then Joaquin in this, but unfortunately I think he's a shoo-in at this point.

 

wouldn't call anything a shoo-in in a world where the last three BP winners were Green Book, Shape of Water, and Moonlight

can’t wait for Joker 2 when Arthur shoots Marvin Gorstase, Gotham’s most famous Italian-American filmmaker

 

Last night I had the most vivid dream I’ve had in a long time.

I was watching Joker for a second time, then suddenly I was in the movie as a character being chased by the Joker. But the whole time I was being chased, I was negatively critiquing the very movie I was in because it just wasn’t well written.

I also desperately wanted to kill him but knew it wouldn’t work because I was in his origin story. So I knew I had to die. But I was more annoyed about this than scared.

Anyway, he killed me and I woke up pretty unaffected which is pretty much how I felt when I saw Joker.
