Part of what makes Marvel & DC characters so interesting after decades of storytelling is how incredibly malleable they are. The mainline versions of these characters have certain defining constants that shouldn't be violated, but you can still do so much with them. And then, when you enter the standalone Elseworlds territory that this film exists in, even those constants become something you can break in order to tell a particular kind of story.

So, no. You very much so do not need Batman for a Joker movie.

Fine, no Batman. But you NEED to have Robin in it at least.

  5. Yeah, without seeing how it's done, it seems like it's not worth worrying about. It could be handled well, or poorly, but there's no way to know as of right now.

This looks like it could be good but the trailer felt... Unsatisfying?

  7. Is this going to be DC’s attempt at that Michael Douglas movie Falling Down? For some reason I get that vibe.

Highlight shot of the trailer was the crying smile.

One thing is for sure, the film really scored a coup with the casting of Phoenix. That dude always brings it.

I really hate how BTH is not even listed among the other cast mentioned in that blurb on the op.

Anyways that trailer was really dark, and I’m somewhat hopeful this will be decent.

I actually think The Hangover is pretty well-made for a raunchy R-rated comedy, and even though the sequels were bad they still had really surprisingly cool cinematography/camera tricks. I actually have a lot of faith in this movie now that the trailer's out

  16. As someone with superhero fatigue who didn't really think this was necessary...if there's one person I'm interested in taking the role, it's Phoenix. Phillips directing is a little worrisome, but I actually liked (didn't love) War Dogs. It's always weird to me when people seem deadset on hating a movie out of the gate, but what can I say. I thought the trailer was very good and I'd like for this to be very good, too.

edit: people being deadset on hating this is in reference to some shitposts I saw on Twitter, not the criticisms in this thread for clarification

I look at the director like Adam McKay. He mostly directed comedies that were just not my kind of comedy. I didn't like them, but then came out with The Big Short, which is one of my favourite films and the direction is fantastic. It's obviously a worry, but it's by no means a death knell.

Listen to his episode on You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes. It's fantastic.

Of his filmography, I really only like Old School. And that's almost due entirely to Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. Still, I’m sort of optimistic that Todd Phillips may end up being a better dramatic director. His movies always have a somewhat darker and pessimistic undertone. Obviously, that doesn't equate to good drama, but I think it could serve this movie and character well.

Plus, I'll see anything with Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, or Brian Tyree Henry.

think with DDL retiring, there's a strong argument he is the best working actor.

I’d agree with that. I’m sure I’m forgetting people, but off the top of my head the only other person who immediately comes to mind would be DiCaprio.

Bale is quality, i don’t rate Denzel as highly as most (though I’m aware I’m in the small minority).
