Till the right one comes and shot in the dark are the best of the new songs on first listen. Last train home still the obvious headliner overall

 

Really enjoyed my listens of this yesterday, but I will say that it’s jarring having songs that I played the shit out of on my summer 2018 and summer 2019 playlists, respectively, just dropped into the track list seemingly at random. “New Light” especially feels fucking ancient at this point.

 

This time I kind of did unintentionally, but I haven't listened to any of the songs. So, I'm stoked to dive in.

 

That song sounded like a bop when he posted a snip of it last year on his IG. I'm so sad its not on this album. I just got to work so I'll be listening to it soon!

 

I have to let my headphones charge because I refuse to listen to this album with just regular earbuds.

Oh man... I absolutely love this so far.

 

I’ll need to give this more time. Upon initial listen I didn’t dislike it. I was expecting more from him though. Still like New Light the most.

 

Just as I was thinking this year overall has been lackluster in the release department, The Maine and this come out within a week of each other. Great album.

 

I like Wild Blue more after a few listens. I don't think I like Why You No Love Me though, just doesn't work for me. Also really wish the closer had more going for it.

It feels like he almost completely ditched conventional choruses on here, a lot of songs just kind of end a verse with the song title a couple of times before moving on to the next one.

 

"Why you no love me" is also an atrocious choice for a white dude who once call his dick a white supremacist.

He did explain the title and reasoning behind the line being phrased that way in the Apple Music interview. But I understand your sentiment none the less.

 

Yeah, I don't care what his explanation was tbh. Which, I did read. It's still atrocious and he, specifically, with his track record, should've found a less racist device to get his point across.

I'm 99.9% sure the view of the title that labels it racist is that it mocks people with Asian accents speaking English.

I hadn’t thought of that when I heard his explanation, but certainly a valid POV. Racial undertones or not, it’s a real dead spot on the record.

To me the biggest problem with that song itself is if you didn’t have that title construction in the chorus it would be most generic thing ever. Sounds like he’s trying an 80s Beach Boys thing there and failing.

This is certainly made for easy listening though. I’m on my fourth time through and definitely feel like I could do this all day.
