It's odd to me that a brief outro of alt-rock could be that off-putting. It's not a whole song. He doesn't go all Fred Durst or start screaming. They've played heavy riffs before.

Plus a few of the songs I could slot right into CTL.[/QUOTE]
They had so much fun playing this live the other night, especially that breakdown.

I love it, off-putting isn't really the word - it just isn't well connected enough with the rest of the song.

Yup this is definitely better than their last two, thank god. Wrote this band off a while ago; didn't think they had this sorta thing in them anymore. Maybe it's just the production but they sound rejuvenated.

Still need to listen to this lol... surprisingly forgot to actually give it a full listen with so much other stuff coming out in the last few weeks and me revisiting a bunch of old favorites.

I guess I enjoy those out-of-the-blue pivots like the end of "Acrobat" by As Tall As Lions, et. al.

I mean, Ian Cohen does still exist.

Album is really great. Growing on me a lot. I have no idea where it stacks up to their previous material but I'm very much enjoying the album.

The back half is spectacular. Only song that I'm not too big a fan of is You With Me

Ha, yep, the Futures comparison was me. I get a similar late-night vibe from this record that I got from that one, though there are parts of the production that remind me of CTL. I think it does a really good job of recapturing the feeling of those older records while still doing new stuff for them.

True lol. His review is honestly pretty great, makes me stoked to finally listen to this soon after I finish writing about some other music I've been meaning to get around to writing down my thoughts on.

"Late-night vibe" is exactly how I would describe the feel I get from Futures... this makes me excited!

Every year I make a "cold fall nights" playlist. "It Matters" from this album was the first track I put on there this year, haha

Yeah in the end that's perhaps the most amazing achievement of their career:

They've released 7 straight excellent records, and each one has a distinct identity

Yeah definitely need to finally listen to this... been trying to get back into music reviewing/journalism so I've been listening to some stuff I'm writing about, but I need to take a break and hear this soon lol

I said earlier in this thread, you always know what you're gonna get with a jimmy eat world album. It's gonna sound like a JEW album without sounding like any other JEW album.

Yeah it's a hell of a trick. How many artists can you really think of with a run like that? Only the best. Dylan, Cohen, Wonder, etc. And to still be adding new things to their repertoire, to boot.

I walked at random until I lost everyone
    Some corner of Hyde Park
Got to my knees and planted hands
And let the world go dark
    Wondering where you are
    Somewhere, spinning like me?
    Oh baby, I can dream.

It's definitely a rarity especially in their genre, the only modern bands I can think of off the top of my head who are like that are converge and every time I die

I guess I might put Copeland there if I were to stick within the genre. And even then it's 7 albums vs 5

They did that one disco rock song... diverse creative geniuses confirmed.

It's not that I find it off-putting - I actually think it's a cool move and respect that they did it - it's just that the music to me is very cheesy and boring sounding. I don't enjoy it at all. To me something a little more along the lines of the heavy parts of 'My Enemy' or 'Get Right' would have been far more enjoyable. Those songs still sound like JEW to me. I get that that sorta defeats the whole purpose though too.

The way 'Pass The Baby' plays for me right now it just sounds like they are playing the song in concert and just randomly threw part of a Soundgarden song in like some bands will do.

it doesn't sound anything like sound garden or as someone said metallica? it sounds like....manchester orchestra. lol. like that riff is straight outta cope

Cannot wait for the era of Nickelback where the guitarist and drummer front a bar cover band called QuarterFront.
