Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

No worries. Work is up there probably in their top 3 of singles I'd say.

    No biggie! :-)

While not one of my favorites from them, I do think Work well, works, as a single. Always gets a huge response from the crowd at shows, too

I'm still stunned at how good Dizzy is honestly.

Dizzy is probably my top song by this band. That bass is so sweet.

I don't love it because of its production, really. I'd prefer something that's half way between the album version and the acoustic version I think. But in terms of pure songwriting.... it's perhaps their best song ever. I just wish I connected with the song as much as it deserves.

Right? Album version and acoustic version are equally great

I don't understand what issues someone could have with the production on Dizzy?

Do you think it's too polished or something? Jim has never sounded better than on that song and the song is mixed perfectly.

  9. minty901

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

I guess too polished. Maybe it's too "busy" for me. I don't think it's bad in any way. It's just not how I imagine the song should sound like to make the most of the songwriting. I'd prefer something that sounds more personal, maybe even Damage-esque production. It just sounds a little try-hard to me, in the production. I feel the beauty of the lyrics and melodies would be able to breathe a little more with less instrumentation going on.

It's not bad in any way and there's nothing objectively wrong with the mixing. It just doesn't sound how I would want the song to sound, so I have a hard time connecting with it. It's like if Hear You Me was a rock song with electric guitar throughout. It might sound good and be produced well... but it might not connect with people in the same way.

Oh right I forgot you were the person who said people disliked the self-titled because of the hive mind. Should have known a massive song with pristine production would've sounded too "try hard" to you.

  11. minty901

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

Come to think of it, have you heard the demo version? That's closer to how I would want it to sound, if they just polished that up a little bit. It's a very different approach to how it ended up on the album.

    Hahahaha.

I'm not saying it's bad it just doesn't work for me.

I've never heard the demo version but I can 1000% guarantee I will like it less than the album version.

  14. minty901

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

That's fine. Well the demo version is how I prefer the song. It feels more personal to me. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. There are plenty of songs where I like them to have a big sound, I just don't think that suits Dizzy too well.

My mind is always blown when people like the acoustic Dizzy as much as the album version... Like, I like it, but the album version is just waaaay bigger to me.

    all we have is time

Woah, woah back up. The production is what makes the song so powerful.

At 3:08.. "I told you as I haven't, I never felt this way." Those guitars there are HUGE. That song's mix is so strong, and all of the production elements just make the song so big.

The recording would not have nearly the same effect on me if it sounded like a demo. I mean, don't get me wrong. A great song will always be a great song.. but this particular recording is special to me because of the emotion and strength in the vocals supported by how strong the actual track is instrumentally. Those drums, guitars, bass tones, automated vocal delays.. everything just adds up. It's flawless.

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

I can't tell if you're actually annoyed or not that I don't like a particular version of a particular song.... I mean I laughed because I assumed you were being facetious in bringing up the "hive mind" thing.

That's fair enough for you. Just something about how big everything sounds makes me feel a bit detached from the emotion of the song. Sometimes huge productions can make things feel a little less "human" I find. That's part of why Damage works so well for the subject matter of a personal heartbreak I think. To each their own.

I might be playing devil's advocate here, because I generally prefer finished products over demos, and terms like "over-produced" rarely impact my perception of a song. However, I will say this: I heard the leaked CTL demos before I heard the album. Dizzy was my favorite track out of all the demos. When I heard the album version, I still enjoyed it, but I felt like the production decisions sort of took away from it just a bit. The song is so strong on its own, and all the added layers sort of worked against it in a way. I still love the song, but I was expecting the album version to escalate an already incredible song into something even more. I rarely side with demos, and I don't even know that I necessarily prefer the demo over the album version, I just saw some incredible potential in the demo, and it didn't reach the heights I felt it was capable of on the album.

tl;dr -- I should have never listened to the CTL demos before hearing the finished album.

All I'm hearing is "Dizzy should have been recorded on an eight-track in a garage. Would've been more emotional that way."
