  4. This was my motherfucking jam when I was about six years old:

It's a Joe Ely cover, but still. That whole Hillbilly Rock record is great too as I recall.

Nice review Craig. Isbell is just such a solid songwriter. Side note, I was reading through this thread and noticed it's pretty much the same handful of people posting in this thread. Do you think Isbell is too "country" for the majority of users on Chorus? Or is his popularity on this site more widespread than what it appears?

Yeah, he might be. There's still a bias against country, even though it's definitely diminishing. I think Isbell has a lot of fans on this site though, even if they haven't been in here much.

    what a waste of wood

After 2 days and 7+ listens I'm still trying to gather my thoughts

I can say that I have come around big time to all the singles that I was meh on before. Especially Cumberland Gap

Chaos And Clothes is put together... very awkwardly..?

Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the way the vocals are overdubbed

Agreed. It's kind of an odd song, and I don't think the demo-style arrangement helps.

I'm a big Isbell fan, but just didn't feel I had much to say about this album that hasn't already been said. I believe this is a pretty big step up from his last album and right now the only song I don't love is Anxiety. I would place If We Were Vampires up against just about any other song he has ever written. I also feel like the chorus of Tupelo is constantly stuck in my head.

I don't feel like I will ever like this more than the last 2. Which isn't a bad thing as they are 2 of my favorites ever.

It is indeed the only thing I can listen to right now though, so who knows.

Going to enjoy this on the way up to Eau Claire on Thursday

Yeah for whatever reason I never loved SMTF as much as most people did. I loved several songs like Speed Trap Town, Children of Children, and the title track but other than those I just never found myself connecting with the rest. However I thought Southeastern was perfect and doesn't have a skippable track anywhere on it.

This definitely ends better than SMTF. "To a Band That I Loved" is a weeeeeeeak closer.

I feel like I enjoy "Hudson Commodore" more than anybody else. It's one of my favorite songs in his discography.

Cumberland Gap seriously rips though.. And it's placed perfectly.

I thought SMTF was very good but a definite step down from Southeastern.

I love TABTIL and I seem to be one of the only ones. I guess I relate closely to loving bands that have broken up or faded away.

Since I've had this last.fm keeping track (9/15/15 and this only counts what I listen to at my office)

Southeastern - 428 Plays - 2nd highest album in my list
Something More Than Free - 229 Plays - 9th highest

Not too damn shabby either way haha

I've come around a bit on "To a Band I Loved," but it's still probably my least favorite closer from any of his solo records. "Relatively Easy" is such a wonderful, life-affirming catharsis at the end of Southeastern. I don't think Something More Than Free feels as complete, largely because the closer is kind of just there.

In addition to having terrific songs wall to wall, Southeastern is thematically cohesive in a way that SMTF isn't.

But I still think the latter is great. It just had a hell of an album to follow.

Agree with this. I mean you could make an argument for atleast three songs on Southeastern being the best song he has ever written.

"Cover Me Up" and "Elephant" are probably both top 10 songs of the decade so far, for me.
