    Super 8 rules lol

I always got chills whenever i’d listen to the Ryman recording of ‘Cover’, the roaring applause when he sings the “but i sobered up” line, but holy shit experiencing that live was something else.

Truly nothing like seeing him play “Cover Me Up” live. And I really mean “nothing.”

I love Super 8. Oddly enough, my wife is a huge Jason Isbell fan and she always says it's one of his only songs that she doesn't like - although there is a live version with Amanda Shires' playing more prominent in the mix (or maybe a different arrangement?) that she says she loves.

This new album is astoundingly good, even for him. On the last few listens, what has stuck out to me most has been: the fact that "Miles" might be my favorite closer of his; that I am completely in love with "Strawberry Woman" after initially and mistakenly thinking it was the weak point of the album on my first handful of listens; and that "When We Were Close" is equal parts heartbreaking and ass-kicking and it does an extreme amount of both.

  6. “Cast Iron Skillet” is the dark twisted sequel to “Outfit” no further questions please

  7. The first time I saw that song live, towards the end when the lights flashed up brighter and Chad started hammering on the floor Tom with the mallet headed sticks or whatever, as Jason went back up to his higher register for the climax…I probably audibly gasped and then some

Yeah, the way they just hammer at those drums live is amazing, and no recording can capture how heart-shakingly loud they are in the room.

The Boston & RI shows were sold out as soon as I checked, and there aren't really any other shows near me so far on this tour, but I am allegedly on some email wait list if tickets open up.....

I can count on one hand the albums that have an opener/closer pairing that I love more than the one on Southeastern. I might be able to count them on one finger.

Southeastern is a top 5 record for me. This new one is fantastic—I love it more with every listen. Seems like I’m in good company in this thread.

Shame he’s coming nowhere near Philly! Hoping for more fall dates.

  17. The dude tours constantly you’ll get something before early 2024 for sure. My brother is in Philly area too so he’s already griped to me about this haha

    what a waste of wood

Perth -> Beth/Rest is only thing I can (personally) place above Southeastern

Kind of a random thought. I’ve always wished Isbell did a little bit of Travis picking. A lot of my favorite folk/county tunes are played over a really pretty or catchy finger picking melody, and I’ve always wanted to hear an Isbell tune played in that style.

  21. I assume Craig meant Born to Run -> Jungleland as the one finger and I would have to agree personally. Perth -> Beth/Rest and Cover Me Up -> Relatively Easy are also up there for me, and if I had to rattle off several others in the same tier I'd go with:

Where the Devil Don't Stay -> Goddamn Lonely Love
London Calling -> Train in Vain
Blood on the Tracks -> Buckets of Rain
Time (the Revelator) -> I Dream a Highway
Return of the Grievous Angel -> In My Hour of Darkness
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart -> Reservations

  22. Think I saw an interview with Jason in the Nashville Sound era, maybe one of those ones on various guitar channels, where he said he doesn't consider himself a very good fingerpicker. I doubt that's *objectively* true but I wonder if that's part of why.

    Dylan's got a few.
Like A Rolling Stone -> Desolation Row
Subterranean Homesick Blues -> It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
I Contain Multitudes -> Murder Most Foul

  24. All of the classic era Bruce and Dylan records that are single LPs really nail the "four corners" (beginning and end of A/B sides)
