I think “Cellular Phone” is a b side or bonus track for this album, that’s like a top five favorite JM song for me. The chorus is phenomenal, but I can see why it wouldn’t have fit on the album.

    The b-sides for this included:

"Miss California" (though, I think this was technically on every copy of the record)
    "Doris Day"
    "At Full Speed"
    "Cell Phone"
    "Sleazy Wednesday"

    Plus the Dear Jack songs:

    "Dear Jack"
    "Diane the Skyscraper"
    "There, There Katie"
    "Swim" (Music Box version)

Of those, my favorites were always "Doris Day," "Katie," and "At Full Speed." I understand why "Doris Day" isn't on there. It's got some similarities to "Crashin." I wish the other two had made it though. "Katie," at minimum, feels like it really belongs.

  3. I had a similarly strong connection to this album (my username may give this away) as it was released at the beginning of my senior year of college. I had it on repeat (along with the b-sides) for most of that year. The lyrical content was so relatable around the themes of change and the unknown. Yet another way that the music can mean different things to different people.

This was a great review, as usual! Really enjoyed reading it.

I don't comment like I used to on Absolute, but this made me want to sign in. Awesome write-up, Craig! I love Andrew. While this album never hit me quite as hard as EIT, I sure do appreciate it. And Hammers and Strings is perfection. I guess it's time to go jam some Glass Passenger. Thanks!

To touch back briefly on the alternate track listing, not only did I listen in the wrong order for years, but I cited “The Resolution” as one of my all time favorite album openers.

That was really good, thanks! I also need to go back to this album soon, which is something I do regularly anyway, it's really important to me, though I agree with most of what you're saying. Love the b-sides too, love the Dear Jack EP. Plus, I also have got a "swim tattoo", though it's quite subtle - it's just a shape of the grand piano, which stood at the horizon line in the promo poster for the song.

I'm in love with the ordinary

    Loving these reviews!!

Really hoping for a vinyl re-issue. After picking up the 10 year EIT vinyl, I'm hoping this and the P&T album get similar treatment with bonus tracks/demos!

    Haha, legendary.

Sounds like it might happen next year. Send him a tweet and let him know you’d buy it!

Can someone post the tracklisting that starts with Resolution? I’m curious how some of you had it

wrap yourself in petals for armor.

This album has always been an intense fall mood for me. Right after it came out, I was in the midst of spiraling into a great depression over the course of several months. Combine that with drives to Hartford to see my friends in college, and those are the images that I see in my head every time I listen to this album - trees turning golden and red and burnt as I drive long Connecticut highways by myself. I only put it on in the fall because it really feels wrong at any other point in the year. The album always had a singular thread of pain that ran through it from beginning to end, a cohesive story and mood - in retrospect that probably had a lot to do with personal issues - but I consider it one of the great albums of my life. Thanks for the review.

A brilliant and overlooked song by him tbh, I always loved it.

Thanks for this review! I love Andrew but never got in to this album apart from resolution and hammer and strings. I also had the version that starts with resolution - will have to listen to the real order now. Enjoyed the reminder about different albums meaning different things to people and can definitely see how this album would have been a lifesaver for some people.
