Elon Musk Spoke to Putin Before Tweeting Ukraine Peace Plan: Report

"In a mailout sent to Eurasia Group subscribers, Ian Bremmer wrote that Tesla CEO Musk told him that Putin was “prepared to negotiate,” but only if Crimea remained Russian, if Ukraine accepted a form of permanent neutrality, and Ukraine recognised Russia’s annexation of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia."

Yeah, those sound like some of the demands Russia might go to the table with, and they are likely almost completely at odds with some of the demands Ukraine might go to the table with, hence the whole idea that both sides would have to negotiate, as much as that will suck for everyone involved.

Negotiate Kherson and Zaporizhzhia to Ukraine and allow the gas to flow along with some other details and that sounds pretty rationale.

of course the US wouldn’t like that.

It's kind of a mute point right now, but I do think it's stupid that people are expecting Ukraine to go into negotiations ready to accept Russia's terms. That's not how negotiating works.

I’m pretty sure Russia is doing that negotiating thing when you ask for a lot more than you’re willing to settle for.

Isn't that honestly what you're supposed to do - head into the negotiations with as strong a set of demands and goals as possible so that after there is some compromising from and concessions made on both sides each side would ideally be able to come away with something they felt strongly that they wanted even though they had to give something up?

yes and that’s what we want if we want the war to end. Imo there’s a high premium on Ukrainian neutrality, but I dunno if the US is willing to give that up.

I agree. I don't really see Ukraine agreeing to neutrality after all that has happened though either. My gut feeling is also that Crimea is 100% a red line for Russia and they will not entertain any talk of giving it back to Ukraine.

I think Ukraine knows Crimea was a lost cause years ago.

That I disagree with. I think right now Ukraine feels like Crimea is very much in play.
