It's definitely cheating haha you are right. I've never been crazy about rankings though, and these guys are so consistently good.

I'll have to go back and check out the self-titled album. When it first came out, and a few times over the years, I did legitimately try to give it a chance, and I just remember thinking a few of the tracks were pretty good and that was it. The only song that even stands out in my mind from that time period is 'Crimewaves’ and that wasn't even on the album. It's always struck me as decent where their other stuff is stellar - like if that was the only thing I ever heard by them I don't think I'd feel the need to search out any more of their music, which is certainly not something I would say about any of their other 4 albums. Maybe I'll find more to appreciate now.

Listened once so far. I like every song a lot, aside from the two short interludes. (Nothing wrong with them per se, just 2 approx minute-long stretches of sounds with not much happening.) The opener and closer both stood out to me as particularly great. Production sounded great to me, and that was just on white Apple headphones. Damn good album. They sound like they're having fun here to me. Can't wait to spend more time with this.

Not really into “Number 10,” but the other two songs are jams — can’t wait to listen tomorrow.

Really digging this. This might sound weird, but it sounds like Interpol doing stoner rock at some points.

Only listened to this twice so far, but it's really damn good. I like every song a lot. The only song I was a little on the fence about when it first started was "Party's Over" but I was totally on board partway through the song. And closer "It Probably Matters" is phenomenal.

I remember reading I think Daniel Kessler saying they cut a song from the tracklist pretty late in the process because they just didn't feel the album needed another song - I'd love to know what they cut because the two interludes don't do much for me at all.

  12. a really good release = all their albums I've enjoyed immensely save for self titled

A lot of what I am reading about this album is lamenting the production, with some people even saying it completely ruins the album. I gotta say I like it a lot. I may even love it. I don't think the production would have even crossed my mind if it wasn't something a lot of other people have been knocking, and that is what I like in my music when I am first hearing it. Not always, but usually, if the production jumps out at me right away when I am first listening to something it is in a negative way.

    hmmm

On first listen, I quite liked the production. Maybe it'll bother me more later but the low-end had a nice rumble to it and even though the mix sounds a little muddy, it kind of worked for me.

I've learnt over the years not to trust my first listen though so make of that what you will.

I generally prefer my Interpol with as super shiney and clean production as possible, but I like the production on here just fine too.

Interpol is flexing on this and it's fantastic! Sam's drumming is a highlight, his grooves are sooo spot on like in Party's Over.

After one listen, I'm not feeling this but I will come back to it because if any band deserves my time, it's Interpol. This band had a run where they soundtracked my entire life. The album I romanticize the most is actually their least admired work.

Back in 2010, I moved out west and worked on a hotel positioned right in the Rockies. It was beautiful. I met this girl who came to work for the summer as well and she brought along her boyfriend. Long story short, I became the other guy, she broke up with first guy for me. I was really into her and thinking it could work after we moved home, and then a week before she left, she broke it off with me and went back to the original dude and moved back home (now I see that she wasn't probably a great catch lol).
Anyways, the point is on the day of the dumping - a leak of Interpol S/T came out and it was so moody and layered and odd. I remember just walking around the hotel grounds for days listening to that album, and there was a huge forest fire in the province next to us so ash had filled the skies and turned everything this weird overcast/hazy. The music, the weather, my mood, it all fit.

It's not my fave album of theirs but I think that the nostalgia I hold with it bumps it up to #3 in my book. The final 3 songs are so good. I've always loved in All of the Ways (around 2:55) when it recalls the piano riff from Try It On buried in the mix.

    Replying to myself here.

Not sure how it didn't resonate with me on first listen. Listened to this twice yesterday in the car and have a few thoughts:

    - I agree with whoever said they venture into stoner rock and if anything I'd say this is the future of Interpol because the jam out/weirder moments on this are easily the highlights.
    - They sound looser in their song writing and their recording. It almost sounds recorded live at parts - you can hear muted strings, slides, mistakes etc. It makes for a far more interesting listen.
    - Daniel's progressions, which are pretty played by now, take some weird turns on this record. A lot of dissonant chords where on my first listen I thought "ugh", I now think "weird". Also - less "ice-pick" telecaster sounds - more layered moments and distorted moments
    - Sam's drumming is top notch. That guy absolutely kills it again and again.
    - I'd still appreciate a slightly cleaner "mix" but maybe it was just my speakers
    - I never read much press for this album but did they find a real bassist or is this Paul again? I found some of the bass lines were above average, which I thought El Pintor struggled significantly with.

I'll head back to El Pintor at some point as I can feel the Interpol-bug is back, but already I think this is better

I don’t really have a history with Interpol nor am I really all that in touch with their kind of music, but I’m listening to this album right now and I have no idea why people are complaining about the production, this album sounds amazing to me. I like the sound so much that I want to buy the CD for my car and get into Interpol.

I think it's Paul. He's introducing tunes from the album on Sirius XMU and mentioned playing bass on a song.
