Oh man, I just learned this morning that Indy and his father didn't keep their immortality after drinking the cup and leaving the cave at the end of Last Crusade. After watching that film a good 97 times or something, I ALWAYS assumed they became eternally immortal after drinking from the cup. But listening to the recent James Bonding podcast on the film, the hosts worded it as if they would be immortal only if they stayed in the cave.

But then looking into this deeper I read that this is in fact the case: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/que...he-holy-grail-give-indiana-jones-eternal-life

Weird to have gotten something so pivotal to the story wrong for so long, haha.

"The Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade novelization by Rob MacGregor makes this clear. The Grail has the power to heal any injuries and clear any diseases or infections. Additionally, the Grail gives the drinker hydration and sustenance and prevents aging for one day per drink. In order to remain immortal and never age, you have to drink from the Grail every single day (like the Grail Knight). Since the Grail cannot pass the seal, that means you are also stuck in the Temple for your immortality.

The Grail Knight did suffer from an occasional crisis of faith during his seven centuries and stopped drinking from the Grail in an attempt to let himself die. He would age by several years each day he went without the Grail's powers. He found his faith again and set himself back to his original purpose, but not before aging into an old man. This is why he is not as youthful as he was when he discovered the Grail.

This aging happened to the two other brother knights who discovered the Grail, then returned to France after 150 years. Only one knight survived to tell his tale to a Franciscan monk before dying of "extreme old age," as Indy describes early in the film. Since they had only been using the Grail's powers a relatively short time (compared to the brother who stayed behind) their aging was slow enough for them to return to France before perishing.

So yes, Indy and Henry Sr. stopped aging, but only for one day. The next day, without the Grail's powers, that one day of age would catch back up with them. However, any diseases or injuries cured by the Grail would not return."

Indiana Jones is immortal because Hollywood loves money and won't let a profitable franchise die.

Shame that the budget for this was astronomical and it’s inevitably going to bomb hard. RIP Indy

I am 99% certain the knight tells them it won’t work past the seal on the floor at the entrance in the film itself. I haven’t watched for awhile. But I don’t think it was ever intended or even implied they would live forever.

I always took it as that the cup itself wouldn't work once it was past the seal, but as long as you drank from it while inside the cave/before the seal, then you were granted immortality. But based on that text above it now makes much more sense

I mean, doesn’t knight say he couldn’t leave? I’ve always known it won’t work outside of there since I was a kid. I need to rewatch it, I can’t recall the exact dialogue.

"You have chosen wisely. But the Grail cannot pass beyond the great seal. That is the boundary and price of immortality"

So I guess whenever I heard that, I just attributed that to the power of the cup itself

Re-watched Crystal Skull last night for the first time in some years. The fridge scene really is the least of this movie's problems. Shia swinging through trees, using a snake as a rope, Marion driving the car off the cliff into a tree, the three waterfalls: everything about this movie is far and away more cartoonish than anything in Temple of Doom. And man, I know they said they wanted to recreate the look of the first three films, but I really can't stand how Spielberg & Kaminski lit this thing.

Yeah in the Last Crusade Indy is told that the power of the grail will not go beyond whatever cave they’re in and that it’s the con of eternal life.

I'm really most excited for John Williams' score for this, never sure but this probably is his last one. I need to go see this in a theater to experience one of his scores just one more time.

I was supposed to see this at 3pm EST today but unfortunately had to refund my ticket because I’m still getting over being sick. Probably won’t be able to see it until next weekend now. Hope everyone that gets a chance to go enjoys it!

Had no idea this was out today - catching an IMAX screening in 90 mins. I don't remember the last movie I saw solo. Just 46 seats sold so far for the screening, but, it IS a Thursday afternoon showtime.
