I’ve already said that the choice lessens the movie. I’m not lacking knowledge on what or why they did it. If it loses nothing for you, great! It does for me.

Hey, I'm not saying you're wrong! You explained your point of view, and I'm just trying to explain mine. At the end of the day, I still think it's a bad movie. That's just not one of the reasons it doesn't work for me.

The ark of the covenant, sankara stones and the holy grail are as mythical as crystal skulls.

Their mythos may predate the movies they maguff in, but they’re fantasy relics functioning in the culture like ~aliens~ do

Last Crusade is obviously the best and I'm not taking questions

The mine cart chase in Temple is one of the best action sequences of the entire franchise. The only problem is every time I watch it now I get distracted by the fact that in some shots they are obviously using puppets in the mine cart lol

The best thing about 4 was Burger King's Indy Angry Whopper.

That's an incredible trailer. Definitely going to see this in theaters as soon as I can.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom is by far the worst video game in the franchise.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is probably objectively the best of the series and arguably one of the greatest motion pictures ever made.

Last Crusade is my personal favorite and the one I find most enjoyable to watch. Probably down to the huge nostalgia factor of my dad taking me to see it in theaters when I was a little kid.

Temple of Doom is the one I have watched the most in my life because I was obsessed with it as a little kid and constantly watched it on VHS. The racism is extremely rough, the sexism is also very rough, but it is a much better adventure movie than anyone gives it credit for. I love that it is so dark even if the older, mellower, not-going-through-divorces George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have both basically disowned it entirely.

Crystal Skull doesn't even feel like an Indiana Jones movie. The alien stuff aside, the overreliance on CGI makes so much of the action seem weightless and inconsequential. Watching the truck chase in Crystal Skull feels absolutely nothing like the truck chase in Raiders. It feels like watching the silly dinosaur stampede scene in Peter Jackson's King Kong - after a few minutes your eyes just glaze over and you're waiting for it to be over. The truck chase in Raiders still feels visceral and brutal decades later and has me on the edge of my seat no matter how many times I've watched it over the years. Spielberg even said the plan for the movie was to not use CGI much at all but then they got on set and realized it was much easier to just use CGI for stuff so they went that route. Not exactly inspiring stuff. Janusz Kaminski may be one of the greatest working cinematographers, and he may have studied Douglas Slocombe's photography and lighting before shooting this movie, but he did an atrocious job approximating the look of the earlier movies. Crystal Skull just looks so digital. I don't know if they used a digital intermediate or just overdid the color grading or what, but the whole movie looks like video even though it was shot on film. I even sort of feel bad for Janusz Kaminski because he has such a distinctive style of his own and it must have been very weird to be given the task of completely copying a different cinematographer's style, but the end result did not work. I honestly believe that Spielberg didn't really want to make the movie in the first place but eventually gave in and did it, and you can tell (again, see Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies). He's still Steven fucking Spielberg, so even him phoning it in is better than most other filmmakers, but I can't imagine anyone watching Crystal Skull and thinking his heart was actually in it. At the end of the day it ends up being an okay-ish adventure movie but a horrible Indiana Jones movie.

I just keep thinking about some set photos that came out that show a very specific setting that has not been shown in any of the marketing yet.

My son and I both have really bad strep throat and we're stuck at home, and we watched Raiders of the Lost Ark & The Last Crusade yesterday. He loved them both. Both were even better than I remembered as it's been several years since I've watched any of them, but The Last Crusade may actually be my favorite movie of all time.
