Yeah I don't follow any specific anime or related things at all and I've seen this posted more than any other deaths in a while

 

The scene that always broke me was when Piccolo and the others jump in to help Gohan when it appears like he is going to lose to Cell. It works because of the literal hundreds of hours of building up those relationships. Your knowledge of Piccolo's mentorship of Gohan, Vegeta's initial inability to overcome his pride, and as corny as it sounds, the power of the friendship. Nothing like that existed in the American cartoons most people grew up with. It was that and Final Fantasy that really bridged the gap to complex, adult narratives when I was a socially awkward teenager who had just moved to a small town. So much of the terminology is just taken for granted between friends I've known for years, talking about needing a senzu bean when we're exhausted or threatening to go Super Saiyan on someone or arguing that Yamcha was secretly the strongest. It's as ingrained as Star Wars or The Terminator or Super Mario.

 

I was surprised at the number of communities on Reddit that were talking about his passing. Many which were not anime or gaming related were still full of comments and articles.

 

I follow a lot of artists on IG and the outpouring for how he inspired them to start drawing as kids was so cool. Most were from people I wouldn’t have even expected. The man is genuine legend.

 

What age?

Maybe Im older because I do not know anything about this person and have only heard about 'Dragonaball' but never watched/played, and Im 50+

And Robin Williams hit me (and I think MY age bracket) more than this.

Mid-thirties. Every boy was rushing home from the bus for Toonami. It cut across racial lines in a way other things didn't.

 

Yeah I'm 31 and any time my friend and I had a sleep over as little kids we would be up late watching DBZ on Toonami or watching some DVD box set he had. And then we made another best friend in high school who was an even bigger fan who hooked us up with streaming sites that had it and I finally got to do my full front-to-back watch of DB and DBZ

I spent much of middle school just drawing DBZ characters when I was bored haha
