I watched this tonight not knowing anything about it and I really sympathize with the character thinking fondly of his past because about halfway thru this I was thinking of my life before I watched two hours and fourteen minutes of nonsense.

This was truly baffling. So glad I went and bought the book before watching this, it was great and reading reactions it seems as if I understood and followed what was going on... yet I still feel baffled.

Regret is a powerful thing. The more I think about this movie the more it’s moving towards brilliance.

I love how opposing reactions are to this. I've been reading the recent Letterboxd reviews every now and then and it seems to either connect pretty strongly or just baffle and annoy.

I still find myself thinking about different parts and what they mean to me or could mean to the character.

After reading up on some analysis I understand the story better and appreciate the themes a bit more, I’m just not really a fan of how the movie gets to the finish line. Talking cartoon pigs and big musical numbers.... not for me

i agree with one of those but pretty strongly disagree with the other, which was extremely effective

got some group text responses about this and it’s pretty wild how many people are missing the point with this

I loooved the pig. The ending has grown on me more as I've thought more about it too.

Obviously the movie touches on major themes in Charlie's other works memory, loneliness, how we relate to other humans etc, but there was some direct overlap Synecdoche NY that I find interesting: janitors being the occupation of main characters, young people in old-age makeup

The end fell very flat for me. The house sequence was so unsettling, I loved it.

  17. I did not like this. I appreciated it a bit more after doing some reading (I have not read the book), but I can't imagine anyone else going in cold and understanding this. Which, again, matters to some people less than others. But even the feel of the film, I just really hated the way the dialogue was written and how dreary it all was, visually. But I see a lot has been written by people who loved it and I'm glad they did, I'm a Kaufman fan as well and I don't have much to argue about. This one just wasn't for me.

me and my wife went in totally cold and were pretty much on the same page with everything i gathered from what spo said the book is about. it’s telegraphed pretty well. i get not liking the movie but saying it’s impossible to understand without outside knowledge is pretty weak.

  19. it's not like I didn't understand anything, it's just that I found the last 30 minutes or so largely indecipherable until I read further about it. feel like I can't be the only one, but good for folks that got it

Yeah, by the end I was fairly sure I "got" it. In the middle? Not at all. and I liked that.

Yeah there were some references and ideas I wasn't fully sure about at first but by the end of my first viewing I was pretty certain about what was happening. I dont even think its supposed to be a twist or that obtuse.

definitely not a twist. telegraphed pretty hard. much more than the book it seems.

Even the more out there parts at the end fall pretty in line with the story the movies trying to tell, they just allow for more interpretation and discussion which I think is great.

Yeah I've seen a lot of people really focus on whether "the twist" works for them or not when it's literally just the premise of the movie. It's the seed that all the other ideas grow from.
